Brewers System Report: Games of April 12, 2010

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 3-4; National League Central): The Brewers lost 9-5 to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Ryan Braun homered but, Milwaukee could not come back from a big deficit.

NASHVILLE (AAA: 5-0; Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds beat Omaha 5-3. Nashville rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth inning to erase a 3-2 Royals lead and stay unbeaten.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: 3-2; Southern League North Division): The Stars won 7-4 at Chattanooga. Taylor Green (’09) tripled, doubled, and drove in three runs for Huntsville.

BREVARD COUNTY (Advanced-A: 2-3 overall; Florida State League North Division): The Manatees lost 2-0 to Lakeland. Trey Watten (’09) allowed one run on two hits over four innings and was charged with the loss.

Brewers System Report: Games of April 11, 2010

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 3-3; National League Central): The Brewers beat the Cardinals 8-7. Casey McGehee’s solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning snapped a 7-7 tie to give the Brewers the victory.

NASHVILLE (AAA: 4-0; Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds beat Iowa 4-2 for a sweep of the four game series in Des Moines. Brendan Katin and Adam Heether each hit a home run for Nashville.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: 2-2; Southern League North Division): The Stars won 5-2 at Chattanooga. Caleb Gindl went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI for Huntsville. Michael Bowman (’09) struck out six over five innings for the win.

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 2-2; National League Central): The Brewers lost 5-4 to St. Louis. The Brewers led 4-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but Nick Stavinoha hit a two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman to give the Cardinals the lead.

NASHVILLE (AAA: 2-0; Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds won 5-2 at Iowa. Nashville bashed three homers, including one by Angel Salome, for the win.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: 0-2; Southern League North Division): The Stars lost 3-2 at Chattanooga. Alex Periard (’09) allowed a pair of runs in the first and one in the second to be charged with the loss.

@Chattanooga 4, HUNTSVILLE 2: The Stars (0-1) scored twice in the first inning, but the Lookouts scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brett Lawrie ('09) and Taylor Green ('09) each had an RBI for Huntsville.

Smokies win North Division, 3-1
Tennessee finishes off Huntsville, await Suns

SEVIERVILLE - The tasty buffet in the locker room is usually the Tennessee Smokies' destination after a game. The pasta was cold and the bread hard by the time the Chicago Cubs' Class AA farmhands picked up their plates Sunday.

First things first.

The jubilant Smokies grabbed icy bottles of champagne after clinching the Southern League's North Division championship with a 3-1 victory over the Huntsville Stars at Smokies Park and sprayed each other in a rousing celebration.

"Wet and wild," a soaked Tennessee manager Ryne Sandberg said of the revelry with emphasis on wild.

The Hall of Famer got a congratulatory kiss from his wife Margaret on the field. Players high-fived and the 1,539 in the grandstand stood and applauded.

Congratulations to the Stars on a great season.

Brewers to discuss how to address issue

The Milwaukee Brewers are not blind to the fact they have no pitching prospects close to being ready for the major leagues.

And they're going to get together after the season to discuss how that vacuum happened.

Assistant general manager Gord Ash plans to conduct "a pitching symposium" in which all of the organization's pitching coaches, doctors and trainers as well as researchers gather to exchange ideas on developing pitchers.

"It's going to be a blank slate," said Ash. "I've asked for topics and ideas.

"Hopefully, it will be a no-holds-barred discussion, but at the end of it somebody has to say, 'This is what we're going to do.' "

Something that may be of interest to Timber Rattlers fans will be a topic of discussion.

Ash wants to learn if the Brewers are doing anything fundamentally that has slowed the progress of pitching prospects. One tactic that will be discussed is the use of young starters in tandem, with each pitching half a game to limit the number of pitches thrown.

"We had one of these symposiums about four years ago," said Ash. "From that one, we came up with the idea of tandems in the lower levels.

"Now that we've had some history with tandems, we want to review that. Is it a good thing? Not a good thing?"

In an effort to limit injuries to young pitchers, the Brewers have restricted them to low pitch counts in games. But players have still broken down, including Rogers and promising left-hander Zach Braddock, who has had shoulder and elbow issues.

Ash said a novel thought by general manager Doug Melvin will be batted around.

"Doug has this idea that starters never get the feel of what it's like to pitch in the eighth and ninth innings (in the minors)," said Ash.

"He's had this long-held idea that it might be a good idea to start (games) with the bullpen and have the starter come in, in the fourth inning and having him pitch four through nine."

Sandberg's squad wins three straight to reach Southern League Final

All season long, Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg's Tennessee Smokies have been learning from him. Now he's learning about them.

He's discovered his young squad's ability to battle back during its Southern League semifinals series, which the Smokies ended by winning their third straight game, 3-1, over the Huntsville Stars on Sunday afternoon.

"These guys have been knocked down a couple of times this year, they always come fighting back," Sandberg said. "At one point this season, we were 13 games under .500. Now we're going to the Championship Series. I just keep getting more impressed with this group of guys every week."

Milwaukee Brewers Report: Games of September 12, 2009

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 67-73; 4th National League Central): The Brewers beat Arizona 9-2. Casey McGehee homered twice and drove in six runs for Milwaukee.

We'll never know what kind of season Casey McGehee might have had if he made the Milwaukee Brewers' starting lineup out of spring training.

What McGehee has done since getting his chance is impressive enough.

McGehee supported a strong effort by right-hander Dave Bush with four hits, including two home runs, and six runs batted in Saturday night, sparking the Brewers to a 9-2 rout of Arizona at Chase Field.

McGehee, who sat on the bench the first six weeks of the season and later lost some playing time with an ailing knee, has started only 68 games. In only 291 at-bats, he has socked 15 home runs and driven in 57 runs, the most by any rookie in the National League.

McGehee also boosted his batting average to .306, tops among NL rookies.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: Southern League): The Stars lost 5-2 at Tennessee. They trail their best-of-five series 2-1.

The Tennessee Smokies finally beat on old friend Saturday night to put themselves on the threshold of the Southern League playoff finals for the first time since 2004.

Pinch hitter Russ Canzler ripped a three-run double off former Smoky Mark Holliman to erase Huntsville's early advantage and Tennessee rallied to deal the Stars a 5-2 playoff loss on Saturday night at Smokies Park.

Milwaukee Brewers Report: Games of September 10, 2009

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 66-73; 4th National League Central): The Brewers were off on Thursday.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: Southern League): The Stars beat Tennessee 4-3 in Game One of their playoff series. Steffan Wilson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 3-1 Smokies lead.

"We went crazy," starting pitcher Josh Butler said of the reaction in the dugout to Wilson's homer. "It's the same as it is right now (in the clubhouse). It was a good experience."

But until Wilson's homer, it looked like one more loss for a team that couldn't seem to get the big hit. The Stars left runners at second and third in the seventh and four runners had been stranded in scoring position. One swing of Wilson's bat, however, provided the antidote.

HELENA (SHORT SEASON ROOKIE: 32-43; 12-25 second half; 3rd Pioneer League North Division): The Brewers won 4-3 over Missoula.

BREVARD COUNTY (High-A: Florida State League): The Manatees lost game one of their playoff series with Tampa. The Yankees won 11-5 by breaking open a 3-2 game with three runs in the fifth and four in the seventh.

BREVARD COUNTY (High-A: 79-48 overall, 39-24 second half; 2nd Florida State League North Division): The Manatees split a doubleheader with Tampa to wrap up their 2009 regular season. Brevard County won game on 11-6. Steffan Wilson homered twice and knocked in three runs for the Manatees in the opener. The Yankees won game two 5-4 in eight innings. Tampa scored twice in the top of the eight and withstood a homer by Wilson in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Milwaukee Brewers Report: Games of September 1, 2009

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 64-67; 3rd National League Central): The Brewers lost 7-6 at St. Louis. Milwaukee had a 3-0 lead, but could not hold it. Matt Holliday hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie.

NASHVILLE (AAA: 72-66; 2nd Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds lost 9-1 to Memphis. The Redbirds scored seven runs in the third inning. Nashville trails Memphis by a ½ game in the division race.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: 63-70 overall, 25-39 second half; 4th Southern League North Division): The Stars lost 1-0 to Birmingham. Huntsville had six hits in the game.

BREVARD COUNTY (High-A: 76-47 overall, 36-23 second half; 2nd Florida State League North Division): The Manatees lost 4-3 in seventeen innings at Clearwater. Brevard County scored twice in the eighth inning to tie the game 2-2. Both teams scored runs in the fourteenth inning. Clearwater scored with one out in the seventeenth to end the game at the five hour mark.

HELENA (SHORT SEASON ROOKIE: 27-37; 7-19 second half; 4th Pioneer League North Division): The Brewers lost 7-3 to Missoula. Helena had 12 hits in the game.

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 64-66; 3rd National League Central): The Brewers were off on Monday.

NASHVILLE (AAA: 72-65; 1st Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds beat Memphis 6-5 in 12 innings. Corey Patterson hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the twelfth to put the Sounds into first place in their division.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: 63-69 overall, 25-38 second half; 4th Southern League North Division): The Stars were swept in a doubleheader at Birmingham. The Barons beat Huntsville 2-1 in game one. Birmingham won game two 3-2.

BREVARD COUNTY (High-A: 76-46 overall, 36-22 second half; 2nd Florida State League North Division): The Manatees were off on Monday.

HELENA (SHORT SEASON ROOKIE: 27-36; 7-18 second half; T-3rd Pioneer League North Division): The Brewers had their game in Great Falls suspended by lightning. The game will be resumed in Great Falls on September 8.
