A tough day for Cody...BUT

It was not a good day for Cody Scarpetta, who got the blown save and the loss after allowing two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, coughing up a one-run lead.

Despite getting two gimme outs - a popped up bunt and a caught stealing on the arm of Angel Salome - Scarpetta walked three batters and allowed a two-run double to Logan Forsythe.

"Three walks in an inning, " manager Ken Macha said. "He got some help there, help with two. But he's a young guy. He's fine. He's got a good arm."

There was some better news about an ex-Rattler near the bottom of the article:

Lorenzo Cain looked good again at the plate, going 2 for 4 and made a nice running catch in deep center field.

Here's the link to the full Q & A. But, first, a taste.

Q. Your 2009 season ended with a promotion to Huntsville in the Southern League and a start against Jacksonville . Just looking at the stats from that game, it shows 5IP, 5H, 3R, a walk, and a strikeout with all three of the Suns runs scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. How did you think you pitched in your first game above the Midwest League level?

A. I thought I pitched pretty well. It was definitely a big change in a sense where the hitters were more advanced and patient. I kind of ran out of gas in the 5^th. I hadn't pitched in a game for a week and it was a hot, day game. I tried to stay on the same routine as what Chris Hook and I did throughout the year and go out there and make pitches. I had a great time there and hope to be there again soon.

It's in the blood

Cody Scarpetta's blood, that is. At least according to this Rockford Register-Star story.

The Scarpettas never stop pitching.

Not to themselves. And not to others. Rockford’s first family of pitching keeps baseball all in the family, even when they are passing it on to others, as they showed Sunday with a pitching clinic at Guilford High School.

“I’m glad our kids are involved in it. I mean, that’s our life, so it’s good,” said Dan Scarpetta, the second-highest drafted baseball player in Rockford history.

Scarpetta and his brother, Dennis, another former minor league pitcher, have coached or conducted clinics for years. But this clinic was proposed by their sons Cody (Dan) and Brett (Dennis). Dennis’ other son, Hononegah senior Ryan Scarpetta, helped out, making this a five-Scarpetta clinic.

“Every time I come home, my dad works with me,” said Cody, an 11th-round draft pick in 2007 who pitched at Class A and AA last year and is on the Milwaukee Brewers’ current 40-man roster. “I’ve caught his lessons since I was 8 years old and grew up with the whole teaching thing.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with young kids. It’s a good feeling to see them connect with what you are telling them. Hopefully, they will learn something and be able to take that into their pitching or baseball routine.”

Cody was 4-11 with a 3.43 ERA for the Rattlers in 2009.

RHP DAVE BUSH: Acquired from Toronto in a trade on December 7, 2005.

ORIGINALLY: The Blue Jays selected Bush out of Wake Forest with a second round pick in 2002. He made his major league debut with the Blue Jays in 2004.

THE DEMON DEACON: Bush was a First-Team All-American and First-Team All-ACC in 2002 for Wake Forest.

A MINOR THING: Bush never pitched at the A Level in his climb up the ladder. He pitched in short season with Auburn in the New York-Penn League, Dunedin in the Florida State League, New Haven of the Eastern League, and Syracuse of the International League. He also made one start for Nashville, Milwaukee’s Pacific Coast League affiliate in 2008.

LAST SEASON: Bush was 9-10 with a 4.18 ERA in 31 games (29 starts) for the Milwaukee Brewers.

PLAYOFFS: Bush was the winning pitcher in Milwaukee’s lone playoff win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 NLDS. Bush went 5-1/3 innings allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts on October 4 at Miller Park.

THIS SEASON: Bush was 3-4 with a 5.67 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) for the Brewers before being placed on the disabled list.

NEAR MISS: Bush took a no-hitter into the eighth inning at Philadelphia on April 23. He was four outs from the first no-no by a Brewers pitcher since 1987. Matt Stairs hit a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to break up Bush’s bid for history. He walked three, struck out four, and got the win in Milwaukee’s 6-1 victory.

LAST MAJOR LEAGUE START: On June 20, Bush took the loss at Comerica Park in Detroit. He allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings to the Tigers.

LAST MIDWEST LEAGUE START: On July 10, Bush faced the West Michigan Whitecaps at Time Warner Cable Field. He allowed one unearned run on four hits over 4-2/3 innings. Bush did not walk a batter and struck out five.
