What made this ad work?

If you read yesterday's entry about the 1960 Fox Cities Foxes, you noticed that the attendance for the game at Goodland Field was 4,741.

You also read about it being Miller Beer Night.

This is the ad in the Appleton Post-Crescent that helped get the people to come on out to the game.

Reason that this ad work? I am leaning to the two free admission coupons at the bottom of the ad, but maybe there were a lot of Bobby Allison fans in the Fox Cities in the 80's.

This is not the 1985 car, but the '88 car is close to how I remember the '85 car.

Unless it was closer to the '83 car since that was still #22 instead of #12.
Not a huge NASCAR fan. I'm just looking for answers.

Rattler Alumni in Mariners commercial

Somehow, I think that this Ryan Rowland-Smith commercial for the Mariners would have been funnier if he had said something like, "That's not a hyphen...THAT'S a hyphen."

Just click the link to see what the heck I'm talking about this time.

These will be clear later (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Just head over to Mehring Monday (Titled Mad Men) for the reason these were posted today. The first few paragraphs:

The title of this column is has little to do with the TV series on AMC. There is is no smoking or drinking at Sterling Cooper today, just a decidedly retro feel that is left over from the old program ads at Rattler Radio. that were posted earlier today.

The post was titled These will be clear later. I meant that a couple of ways. The first has a little to do with the ads themselves. Who were some of the Foxes sponsors at that time? What is interesting about these graphics? I wasn't planning to go full Lileks on them (like he's doing with the 1934 Sears Catalog) but maybe just point out a few things.

The second gives me a jumping off point into the column for today. This is a tough column to write, because I need to ask for something while I am also trying to entertain and inform. So, please just bear with it to the end.
Original post below...

Click each page for a larger image. There will be a link to somewhere else later. There may be a comment or two right here later as well. But, right now, enjoy the vintage goodness of some old program ads of the Appleton Foxes. A few have been posted here at an earlier time. The top two -- from the 1969 program -- are new to the blog. The middle one is from 1977. The page with the soon-to-be-Miss America Terry Meeuwsen singing the National Anthem is from 1973. The last page is from the 1970 program.

You mean it wasn't before?

No. Seriously. It wasn't before?
The only thing that will be lighting up inside Fifth Third Ballpark this season will be the scoreboard.

That's because the ballpark is now smoke-free.

It's a move the West Michigan Whitecaps organization contemplated the past couple of seasons, but officials decided now was the time.

"We've fielded various complaints about the smoking at the park because people had to walk through the two smoking areas, (the first and third baselines near the lawn seating), but nothing serious," Whitecaps vice president Jim Jarecki said.

"We did it as an accommodation for all our fans."
Well, except for the fans who are smokers.
Smokers attending Whitecaps games must now light up near the gate areas along the first and third baselines, as well as the outfield gate area.
So, it will be just like the bus ramp in High School? At least when I went to high school.

There is this bit there Fort Wayne:
The Fort Wayne TinCaps, who changed their nickname from Wizards, will open a new city-owned ballpark this season. The TinCaps and the city of Fort Wayne, which has smoke-free facilities, are negotiating the park's smoking status and expect to have a decision before the April 9 season opener, a team representative said.
and another bit about Clinton and state law in Iowa and...Boy. Times have changed...

They really have changed...
