Flashback Friday: 1959 Program pages 11-13

Back to the 1959 program for this week's Flashback.

Page 11 is notable for a frighteningly large apple as the mascot for WAPL. Also, note that WAPL of 1959 is much different from the WAPL of today.

The J.S. Vander Meer who is noted as the manager of Topeka is Johnny "Back-to-back no-hitters" Vander Meer.

Random diner in 1959 walks into a restaurant and asks, "Do you grill?" The man behind the counter responds. "Did you read the sign outside?"



Oh, and Dick's Tavern at 223 E. College Avenue is now Jim's Place.

Two ads for bowling alleys on the same page. I don't think that either minded because they were on the same page as Potato Pascual, the popular player and batting champion from 1958.

Don't you love that the player from 1958 has a bigger picture than the mayors of Kaukauna and Little Chute.


Are Clark stations still around? I haven't seen one in a long time.

Isn't it interesting that an ad for premium beers like Blatz and Hamm's and Old Style share a page with an ad for the area pharmacists?

And I should hope that the pharmacists did their one year internship at an ethical pharmacy.

Flashback Friday: 1959 Program

Deadlines and cleaning and just overall getting ready for the 2010 season have taken over this week. But, I did not want to let Flashback Friday go by without something this week.

So here is a little project that I have been saving for just such an occasion. I have scanned in the entire 1959 Fox Cities Foxes program. Over the next few weeks, I'll share a few pages at a time.

This week the cover and the first three pages.

Again, Three I League stands for Indiana-Illinois-Iowa. There are no teams in Indiana, no teams in Illinois, two teams in Wisconsin, a team in Nebraska, a team in Kansas, and four teams in Iowa.

One of my goals is to find the addresses for some of the taverns that advertised in 1959 and see if they are still around.

For example, Schreiter's Tavern at 211 So. Walnut. Put that address into Google Maps and when the street view comes up hit the button that moves the view to the left to see what it is now.

Also, I want to point out how awesome it is that -- in the hometown of Tailgunner Joe and just two years after his death -- there was a business called People's Laundry. From each according to his starch preference to each according to their stains. They probably ran a special on May Day.

It looks like a much happier place now. If you live in Appleton, you have driven by the place and seen a gorilla.

The Lawrence H. Rennert of Oshkosh, Wisconsin on the umpire list? Yes. That is future National League Umpire "Dutch" Rennert.
I was just in the Zuelke Building to drop something off the other day. They still have a barber shop, but it is on the ground floor. It's called the Plaza Barber Shop. I almost stopped in to get a haircut.

Another Goodland Field photo

This picture of Goodland Field, which is undated, is being used here as a lead in to this week's Friday Flashback.

Back in 1984, a writer by the name of William Gildea traveled the US and visited some baseball stadiums. The second in his series of three articles was published in the Style section of the Washington Post in August. This second article dealt with two games that he and his two boys saw at Goodland Field, home of the Appleton Foxes.

It's a lengthy read, but well worth it.

Pictures for the Flashback (LINK ADDED)

This week's Friday Flashback is from an August 8, 1999 Post-Crescent article that followed the Timber Rattlers on a brief two-game road trip to Peoria. There were some pictures by H. Rick Mach that went along with the article. I could only use one with the article on the main website, and it had to be cropped down to fit.

How to use all three? Then, I remembered. I have a blog!

This is the picture I went with for the article. It is the team lined up for the National Anthem before a game at Vonachen Stadium in Peoria. I used it because it was in color. And it shows off the rockin' pressbox they had there. I'd make a "joke" about the Cardinals logo on the facing of the pressbox, but no one would get it.

I liked this one of Enmanuel Ulloa (L) and Melqui Torres (R) because it's just a quiet moment in the clubhouse after a game. And also, because until this very moment, I never knew that Torres was a big Michigan fan. At least I hope that's why he is wearing a hat with a big 'M' on it.



This is PJ Williams on a pay phone. For our younger readers out there, a pay phone is: A public telephone in which payment is made in coins or through use of a calling/credit card before the call is placed. These were big before cell phones. Perhaps next week I can find an ad for 1-800-COLLECT with Eva Savealot.

One of these men...(UPDATED)

That's Tom Gordon in an Appleton Foxes uniform from some time in the 1988 season. This week's Flashback Friday is about two amazing games (May 16 & May 22) for Flash. He struck out 16 in one start and 19 in his next start.

So, I needed to post this image here before the article gets posted. Get it? Got it? Good.

And yes, I will put a link to the Flashback on this post when it gets posted. This is almost like a time travel paradox. Almost.

Flashback Friday is about family

The Jim Eisenreich Story from a 1987 PC column.

The story of Jim Eisenreich is a good one: A hot prospect has his rookie year derailed by a misdiagnosis. Toss in a classy act (being sarcastic here) by Boston Red Sox fans, a couple years out of professional baseball, and a comeback that has a very happy ending and you have a biography worthy of a Hollywood movie.

Eisenreich's story has a local tie to it as well. Charlie Eisenreich, Jim's younger brother, played for the Appleton Foxes in 1987 and Gary Shriver's Foxes Notes column from the June 21, 1987 edition of the Post-Crescent covers the details. It is also this week's Friday Flashback.

Plus, later in the column, discover a lost member of the Appleton Baseball Honor Roll.

Flashback Friday for December 4, 2009

That is a Post-Crescent picture of Craig Kuzmic playing third base in a game against the Beloit Snappers on September 6, 1999.

That was one of nine positions that Kuzmic played on that day for the Timber Rattlers.

That was the first year of the Royals affiliation and this particular second baseman had a really, really, really good year.

I was digging through the archives and found an article that might be of special interest to history buffs, South Bend employees, and people who wonder about the old White Sox/Foxes marriage.

This week's Flashback is front page article from the June 29, 1985 edition of The Post-Crescent. Gary Shriver's article serves four purposes. The first part of the article is the main part and it deals with the possibility of the Appleton Foxes and the Chicago parting ways after a long affiliation and where the White Sox might be headed. The second part -- which is the shortest part of the article -- deals with the player development contract. What it is, who pays for what, etc. The third part is one of the most concise histories of baseball in Appleton that I have ever read. The final part of the article gets into the reasons why Chicago might end the affiliation and some of the arrangements that Appleton Baseball, Inc. had with the City of Appleton in running Goodland Field.
