It was a lot like this....

If I had to sum up the Fort Wayne-Wisconsin series in a YouTube video...This would be it, minus Lee Merriwether as Catwoman:

Roster Move (8/7)

In case you miss it in the Game Notes post below....

RHP Tom Ellis promoted to the Rattlers from AZL Mariners
RHP Anthony Varvaro transferred to the Everett AquaSox (NWL)

Just a paper move for Varvaro. He is still going to make his start against West Michigan on Saturday.

Game Notes -- 8/7

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Fort Wayne Wizards beat the Timber Rattlers 9-8. Jeremy Hunt homered twice and drove in six runs for Fort Wayne. Hunt’s second homer was a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning that erased an 8-6 Rattler lead.

LEADS, EVERYWHERE LEADS: Gavin Dickey gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead with a home run in the second inning. But, Hunt hit a two run homer in the third. The Rattlers scored three in the fourth to retake the lead at 4-2. Fort Wayne kept getting close, but the Rattlers pushed a 6-5 lead to an 8-5 advantage with consecutive two-out singles by Jamie McOwen and Blake Ochoa in the top of the eighth. Then, the Wizards rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth capped by Hunt’s go-ahead homer.

ONE MORE TO THE LIST: The blown save for the Rattlers last night was their fourteenth of the season.

FOR KICKS: The Timber Rattlers and Wizards battled for four games in the series at Memorial Stadium. Wisconsin won the first three games of the set before losing on Monday. Here is the line score for the entire series:
..........R-H-E
WIS..42-57-4
FW...32-44-5
TIME: 15:30

WORKING THE BULLPEN: In the four games of this series, the Rattler bullpen has pitched 30 of the 42 innings. The Wizard bullpen pitched 24-2/3 of their 43 innings.

POWER SURGE: The Timber Rattlers had not homered in 73-1/3 innings before Ron Garth hit a home run in the final game of the Dayton series on August 2. The Rattlers proceeded to hit seven home runs in the Fort Wayne series.

OFF THE ROAD: The Rattlers went 4-4 in the eight-game trip to Dayton and Fort Wayne. Wisconsin had the lead in seven of those eight games.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Right handed relief pitcher Tom Ellis joins the Timber Rattlers today to bolster the relief corps. Ellis, an Australian, is in his first season as a professional. He began the season with Seattle’s Arizona League affiliate. In twelve appearances (two starts), Ellis had been 0-1 with a 3.91 ERA. To make room for Ellis, Anthony Varvaro has been transferred to the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League. Varvaro will stay with the Rattlers and is scheduled to make his next start for the team on Saturday versus West Michigan.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They won the first half Western Division title with a 44-26 record. They currently have the best record in the Midwest League at 69-43. In their most recent series, the Snappers split four games with the Dragons. Beloit is managed by Jeff Smith.

THE SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 1-7 against the Snappers. The teams split two games on Time Warner Cable Field April 17 and 18. Beloit beat the Rattlers in all six meetings at Pohlman Field this season. That streak includes a four-game sweep July 17-20.

COMPARE & CONTRAST: The Rattlers have a team batting average of .244 (13th in the MWL) while the Snappers have a team average of .240 (14th). Beloit has scored 479 runs (9th) compared to 434 (14th) scored by Wisconsin. Snapper hitters have 79 homers (T-4th), while the Rattlers have 54 (13th). The Beloit pitching staff has an ERA of 3.09 (1st). Wisconsin’s hurlers have an ERA of 4.22 (11th).

PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA put five members of the current Snapper roster on their list of top thirty prospects in the Minnesota organization. Chris Parmelee is the top rated Snapper on the list at number four. Joe Benson (#8) and Paul Kelley (#9), who is on the DL, are both in the top ten. Pitchers Tyler Robertson (#24) and Alex Burnett (#28) are also on the list.

OUT OF THE DRAFT: The Snappers have one member of the 2007 Minnesota draft class on their active roster. Chris Cates was the 38th round pick out of the University of Louisville.

OPPOSING STARTER: Brian Kirwan was the 11th round pick of the Twins in the 2005 draft out of Santa Fe Christian High School in Solona Beach, California. He did not pitch professionally in 2005. Kirwan went 5-5 with a 5.63 ERA in 13 starts for Elizabethton in the Appalachian League in 2006. He was rated as the 14th best prospect in the Appalachian League by Baseball America. Kirwan joined the Snappers in late May. In his last start, the Fort Wayne Wizards beat Kirwan on August 2. He allowed two runs on seven hits over 6-1/3 innings. He faced the Rattlers on July 18 at Pohlman Field and got a no decision. In that game he pitched four scoreless innings and allowed two hits.

Game Notes -- 8/6

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Rattlers beat the Fort Wayne Wizards 19-10. Leury Bonilla drove in six runs, Joe White hit a grand slam, and Ron Garth had four hits to lead the offense. Justin Souza allowed one run over three innings for the win.

EARLY OFFENSE: The Rattlers scored five runs in the top of the first. White’s grand slam made it 5-0.

COULDN’T HOLD IT: Rattler starting pitcher Tony Butler allowed a run in the first and – after Garth hit a homer in the top of the second – five runs in the bottom of the second and the Wizards tied the game 6-6.

MR. EVERYTHING: Bonilla hit a three-run homer in the top of the third and the Rattlers were back in front 9-6. Bonilla also had a two-run single in the sixth and an RBI single in the eighth. Bonilla has played every position in the field except centerfield this season and picked up the save in the Rattlers Saturday night win over the Wizards.

BREAKING OUT: Bonilla had two RBI in the second half of the season before his six yesterday.

SLAMMIN’: White’s grand slam was the second of the season for the Timber Rattlers.

COULDN’T HOLD IT (PT II): The Wizards scored a run in the third and got three runs in the fourth to take a 10-9 lead. Butler allowed the run in the third and left after allowing the first two batters of the fourth to reach. Souza got the first two outs of the frame, but allowed a two-run double and an RBI single to let the Wizards take the lead.

COMEBACK: Alex Liddi tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth. Then, Bonilla put the Rattlers up 12-10 with his two-run single in the sixth. Blake Ochoa followed with a two-run double and it was 14-10. Wisconsin tacked on five more runs in the eighth.

FORT FUN: After scoring a total of three runs in their three consecutive losses at Dayton, the Rattlers have scored 34 runs and collected 45 hits in the first three games of this series with the Wizards.

THE HECK WITH TRENDS: Despite allowing five or more runs in all three games of the series, Wisconsin has won all three. The Rattler record when allowing five or more runs this season is now 7-45.

OPPOSING STARTER: Cory Luebke was the 63rd overall pick in the 2007 draft. The Padres selected him as a supplemental first rounder out of Ohio State University. He was 9-1 with a 2.03ERA in sixteen starts and was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year in his final season with the Buckeyes. Luebke was 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA in eight appearances (three starts) for the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League before joining the Wizards. On July 1, in his Midwest League debut, he allowed three runs on six hits over four innings and took the loss against Beloit. Luebke is making his first appearance against the Rattlers. I wonder if this is where I can write to find out how I am doing in there NASCAR pool.

Someone beat me to it...

Last week as Tom Glavine prepared to make his start at Miller Park against the Brewers in his first attempt at career win #300, USA TODAY and several other media outlets began with a familiar story.

Tom Glavine was a teenager when pitchers Gaylord Perry and Steve Carlton notched their 300th career victories in 1982 and 1983. Two years later, Tom Seaver and Phil Niekro reached the milestone. A year later, so did Don Sutton.

Five 300th victories in five years.

"You would have thought every year, another guy makes it," Glavine says.

Now Glavine, and everybody else, knows better.

Since that parade of pitching greats joined the 300 club in the 1980s, only three other hurlers have accomplished the increasingly rare feat — Nolan Ryan in 1990, Roger Clemens in 2003 and Greg Maddux in 2004.

The theme of this story and others is that after Glavine, there will be no more members of the 300 win club.

I'm pretty sure that I remember the 300 club was laid to rest after Sutton in 1986, after Ryan in 1990, and after Maddux in 2004. I'll see if I can dig through some web archives after the Maddux milestone to find a similar story.

The mistake some make is they only focus on pitchers over 200 wins. I saw a list that included Randy Johnson, Jamie Moyer, and Mike Mussina. What about the younger pitchers?

My post was going to be about how there may be a gap, but there will always be pitchers that have the talent, longevity, and luck to get to 300 career wins. Then, I was going to go through a list of the most likely candidates.

As is usually the case, I waited too long and someone beat me to it. On top of it, did better than I could have...

Vegas Watch has the post I wanted to write HERE.

In case you somehow missed it, Tom Glavine won his 300th game on Sunday night.

This caused various people to talk about how Glavine might be the last 300 game winner.

Now, I think some of this talk is simply shortsighted. People look at the active players with the most wins, and don't see much hope in the near future. Randy Johnson is only 16 away, but he's 43 and out for the year. After him is Mike Mussina at 245, but he's 38 and hasn't won more than 15 games since 2003. And after that it's a bunch of guys who are 40+ and still a long way away. And that's fine. It's reasonable to say that we might not have a 300 game winner in the next decade.

But to say that there will NEVER be a 300 game winner again? Olney was on ESPN after the game talking about this, and said something to the effect of "Well people are so careful with pitchers now, they're more likely to go on the DL and miss time".

Well, yeah, I guess that's true, but isn't this a point for there being another 300 game winner. Isn't the more advanced medical technology helpful for these guys? It seems to me that missing a few starts now is helpful if it tacks on another year at the end of your career.

Over at AA, OMDQ also had a problem with this argument, disagreeing with ESPN's use of a stat showing the demise of the complete game.

Anyway, I thought I'd take a look at which of the younger guys (under 32) have the best chances of getting to 300 wins.

Follow the link for the list.

Interesting Larry Stone Column

This was from yesterday's Seattle Times...By the way is there aren't too many Larry Stone columns that aren't interesting.

Midseason promotions can make or break a playoff push

This week, the organization finally decided that it could wait no longer.

The phenom outfielder had nothing left to prove in the minors, where he was hitting over .300 with power. So with the pennant race raging, the team called him up to The Show and hoped for an infusion of youthful energy, as well as a jolt of needed offense.

I'm talking, of course, about the Arizona Diamondbacks, who on Thursday summoned Justin Upton, generally considered the top prospect in baseball, from Class AA Mobile.

Upton, just 19, will take over right field for the Diamondbacks, who have shot to the top of the National League West.

"He's not going to be here to sit," manager Bob Melvin told reporters.

The move, of course, mirrors that of the Mariners, who brought up their own uber-prospect, 22-year-old Adam Jones, from the minors on Friday. The Mariners plan to ease Jones into the majors as a spot starter.
...
It's a time-honored tradition in baseball, the midseason promotion of the young phenom, rivaling the trade-deadline acquisition as the bastion of hope for a contending team.
...
The most famous example in history occurred in 1957, when the Milwaukee Braves needed to dip into the minors in late July to replace injured outfielder Bill Bruton. They summoned 26-year-old Bob Hazle. It was a stroke of genius. Hazle, known forever after in baseball lore as "Hurricane Hazle," hit .403 in 41 games for the Braves, with seven homers and 27 RBI. The Braves won the NL pennant, then defeated the Yankees in the World Series.

Hazle would play just 63 more games in his major-league career, derailed by a beaning that left him hospitalized for a week. But he was immortalized that summer.

Bonus points for a Milwaukee Braves example. And now a counter-example:
Teams don't always hit with their call-ups, of course. The 1983 Braves faltered after calling up highly touted outfielder Brad Komminsk in August. He hit .222 with no homers and four RBI in 19 games as the Braves lost the division by three games. Of course, it didn't help when Bob Horner injured his wrist a few days after Komminsk arrived.

On the home front...

After tonight's game in Fort Wayne, the Rattlers have a 16-game home stand. How will we survive?

Rattlers front office looks to mix business, pleasure

"Our fulltime staff will be having a mustache growing contest throughout the whole homestand," Zerjav said with a laugh. "And for our game day staff and fulltime staff, we're going to do more spirit week ideas, like having a wacky hat day. Just things like that to keep people entertained and motivated."
What will I look like with a mustache?

Exactly like that!

By the way, the latest Mehring Monday is up on the Rattler site. Who said watching too much TV would never pay off?

Game Notes -- 8/5

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers outlasted the Wizards with a 6-5 win in 12 innings. Jamie McOwen doubled in the go ahead run with a double. Blake Ochoa knocked in McOwen with a single. Keith Renaud picked up the win with 4-1/3 innings of relief. Leury Bonilla came off the bench to get the final out –with a strikeout – for the save.

LOSS OF CONTROL: The Rattlers had a 4-2 lead with two outs and none on base in the bottom of the sixth. Then, Wisconsin starting pitcher Kyle Parker walked Keith Conlon and Matt Stocco. Rollie Gibson relieved and walked Robert Perry to load the bases and Cedric Hunter to force in a run. Drew Fiorenza entered the game and walked Jon Schemmel on four pitches to force in the tying run. Five straight walks.

BULLPEN: Timber Rattler relievers have worked 16 innings out of the 25 innings played in the first two games of the series.

THE VERY LONG NIGHT OF KEITH RENAUD: The 10th round pick of the Mariners in the 2007 draft threw over 70 pitches in 4-1/3 innings for his longest outing as a professional. Renaud did not allow a run until the bottom of the twelfth. He walked three and struck out three. The win was Renaud’s first as a professional.

SAVING THE DAY: Bonilla, who has started games at every infield position, left, right, and DH; and has entered games to catch twice this season, relieved Renaud in the bottom of the twelfth with the tying run at first. He balked that runner to second, but struck out Conlon on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

THE LAST TIME: The last Timber Rattler position player to get into a game was Robby Hudson on August 5, 2006. Hudson worked a scoreless inning against the Beloit Snappers.

FOUR!: Jamie McOwen had four hits, including two doubles.

SECOND CHANCE: McOwen appeared to have flown out in the twelfth inning with the go ahead run at first. However, a balk was called on Fort Wayne pitcher Jodam Rivera to move the runner into scoring position. Rivera started the game at second base for the Wizards. McOwen doubled into the left field corner to drive in the run.

HELPING HAND: Kuo Hui Lo’s outfield assist in the bottom of the tenth was his team leading ninth of the season.

OVERTIME: The Rattlers are 7-1 in eight extra-inning games this season.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Jair Fernandez went on the disabled list before the game last night. Catcher Blake Ochoa joined the Timber Rattlers from Everett in the Northwest League. Ochoa started the season with the Florida Marlins South Atlantic League team in Greensboro. He came over to the Mariners in a mid -July trade that involved former Rattler Danny Santin.

OPPOSING STARTER: Stevie Delabar was the 29th round pick of the Padres in 2003 out of Volunteer State Junior College in Tennessee. He was 8-9 with a 3.41 ERA in 27 starts last season for the Wizards. Delabar started the ’07 season with Lake Elsinore in the California League and went 2-6 with a 5.59ERA in 20 relief appearances before returning to the Wizards in early June. In his last start for Fort Wayne, Delabar went 2-1/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and four hit batters. Delabar made two starts against Wisconsin last season and he went 0-1 with a 3.72ERA.

Where do you want to be in two years?

Sometimes that question is answered with "On a beach with an unlimited supply of MGD."

Sometimes that question is answered with "Why would I want to be anywhere else."

Sometimes that question is answered with "Two years? I laugh at two years!"

The Fort Wayne Wizards have answered that question with "In a new downtown stadium.

Hundreds of people packed Grand Wayne Center on Thursday evening to get the latest glimpse of condominiums, retail and the baseball stadium aspects of Harrison Square.

City leaders, along with Hardball Capital and Barry Real Estate, hosted an open house to give residents an update on how the project will look.

The vast majority of the 300 people at the open house expressed support for the project and dozens expressed an interest to live in the condominiums even though prices weren’t revealed and final floor plans haven’t been completed.

Game Notes -- 8/4

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers defeated the Wizards 9-8 in thirteen innings. Alex Liddi drove in the go ahead run with a two-out single in the top of the thirteenth. Joe Kantakevich pitched four scoreless innings for the victory.

BACK AND FORTH: Wisconsin had a led 1-0. The Wizards took a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin tied the game 2-2. Fort Wayne went in front 6-2. The Rattlers pulled to within 6-5 and then went in front 8-6. Fort Wayne tied the game 8-8 with a pair of runs in the seventh.

WALKING THE LINE: Rattler starter Nolan Gallagher walked six in 3-1/3 innings before leaving the game. That matches the most walks issued by a Rattler pitcher this season. Six Rattler pitchers combined to walk 12 Wizard batters last night.

BIG COMEBACK: The Rattlers trailed 6-2 after the Wizards scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. By rallying for the win, Wisconsin matched the largest deficit they have overcome for a victory this season. The Rattlers trailed Great Lakes 4-0 on May 9 at Midland and rallied for a 6-4 win.

POWER SURGE: Reed Eastley, Gavin Dickey, and Ron Garth homered last night. The Rattlers have hit four home runs in the last two games. The recent upswing comes after a homerless drought of 73-1/3 innings.

SAVE OPPORTUNITY: Cedric Hunter’s two-out, two run single off Harold Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game 8-8 for a blown save. The Rattler bullpen is 19-for-33 in save opportunities this season.

OUT AT THE PLATE: Both teams threw out a runner at the plate late in the game. Jon Schemmel tried to score from second on an infield singe in the bottom of the eighth, but Joe White threw him out. Reed Eastley tried to score from second on a single by White in the top of the ninth, but Cedric Hunter threw out Eastley at the plate.

WHITE NOISE: White had three hits and three RBI for the Rattlers last night.

THE LONGEST OUTING: Kantakevich’s four-inning outing last night was his longest as a professional.

THE LONGEST NIGHT: The game time of 4 hours and 33 minutes made last night the longest game -- by time -- of the season for the Rattlers. Wisconsin also played a 13 inning game on June 1 in a 2-1 win over the Burlington Bees.

OVERTIME: The Rattlers are 6-1 in seven extra-inning games this season.

OPPOSING STARTER: Brandon Gomes was the 17th round pick of the Padres in 2007 out of Tulane. Gomes was 7-6 with a 3.92ERA in 16 starts for the Green Wave in his final season. He made four relief appearances for the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League in his professional debut. Gomes was 1-0 and allowed no runs on one hit over 6-1/3 innings for the Emeralds. He made his Wizard debut on July 1 as a reliever. In his last start for Fort Wayne, Gomes allowed four runs (three earned) over seven innings against Beloit on July 30. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

Roster Move (8/4)

Catcher Jair Fernandez placed on the disabled list
Catcher Blake Ochoa promoted to the Rattlers from Everett (Northwest League)

Ochoa started the 2007 season with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Florida's South Atlantic League team. He was traded to the Mariners in exchange for Danny Santin a couple of weeks ago. Ochoa's MILB.com page is HERE.

Roland the Appleton Baseball Hall of Famer

I saw this story on BaseballAmerica.com this morning about Roland Hemond. It's from a few days ago, but it's new to me.

Hemond Returns To Diamondbacks

Longtime baseball executive Roland Hemond is returning to the Diamondbacks as a special assistant to the president, ending a nearly seven-year run as an adviser with the White Sox.

Hemond is one of the most respected executives in the game and had previously worked for the Diamondbacks from 1996-2000 as a senior executive vice president. He will now assistant [sic] Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall in a variety of roles, including "special projects, industry relationships and international initiatives," according to a team release.

Hemond is in the Appleton Baseball Hall of Fame for his contributions to the Appleton Foxes when he was the general manager of the Chicago White Sox from 1973-1985. During that stretch, the Foxes were the Midwest League affiliate of the White Sox.

Appleton won four Midwest League Championships (1978, 1982, 1983, and 1984) and appeared in two other MWL Championship series (1974, 1985) while Hemond was the GM of the Sox.
"I am indeed very happy to rejoin the Diamondbacks organization," Hemond said. "It is gratifying to be welcomed back by Derrick and other members of the front office. I have been impressed by what has transpired with the Diamondbacks recently and I want to lend my experience to contribute in any way I can to make this organization even more successful for years to come."

Good luck in Arizona, Roland.

The Midwest League record book really needs updating

There are a few points in the Midwest League record book that haven't been updated in several years....For example, Paul O'Neill is still listed as an active Midwest League veteran.

Also, Dayton Dragon hitters have broken the Midwest League record for strikeouts that is listed twice and have not received "credit".

But, this one regards something a bit closer to home.

An old newspaper clipping was handed to me during the last home stand. It is proof that the recent 14 game losing streak by the Timber Rattlers is not the Appleton baseball record for consecutive losses. The fourth team with 15 consecutive losses in Midwest League history was the 1973 Appleton Foxes.

The below article is from the May 14, 1973 edition of The Post-Crescent. I'll scan it in when I get back:

Foxes halt record loss streak at 15

CLINTON, Iowa -- Woody Eppinette, with ninth inning relief help from Ron Slingerman, made a first-inning outburst stand up Sunday as Appleton beat Clinton, 4-2, to end its season-opening losing string at 15 games.

The Foxes exploded for four runs in the first inning as seven of the first eight men collected hits. The big blow of the inning was a 2-run triple by Joe Pomykala.

The 15-game losing streak set a club record and tied the league mark for consecutive losses.

Epinette toiled eight innings and....

the article continues below the box score from the Saturday game (loss #15 in a row) and that part is not on the copy that I have. But I would guess that goes a little something like this:

allowed two runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Slingerman allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to help the Foxes end their losing skid and move their record to 1-15.

Lespier started the first inning rally with...

The article picks up here:

...a single to left. Nyls Nyman grounded a single between short and third and Bob Stolarick's line single to left scored the first run. After a pop out; Pomykala lashed his triple into left-center. Bill Bagwell scored Pomykala with a single to right.

Bagwell's hit brought on Jim Harris in relief of loser Bob Moran, now 1-1. Bagwell was thrown out stealing before George Enright and Johnny Johnson singled. Johnson was picked off first by catcher Emmanuel Toledo for the third out.

Clinton scored its first run in the second on Phil Mancosky's single, a fielder's choice and hits by Quinomes, Mark Wagner, and Toledo.

The Pilots added another run in the third on Jim Eschen's leadoff double and sacrifices by Bill Baldwin and Mancosky.

Not that I haven't made a mistake on this blog (or off this blog for that matter), but it begs the question...What other records are incorrect in the MWL Record Book?

From the Mariner Notebook

Don't know if you've seen this story with these Carlos Guillen comments about the Adam Jones call up.

"I guess they have something to do, but this is a totally different league," Guillen said. "I understand he's a good prospect and if they think he's ready, then hey, we'll see. He's going to have to come here and prove that to us.

"Because this team has been good with what we have and I don't think that's what we need. ... I just completely don't understand that move right there."

Here are today's comments after the 2-for-4 '07 debut by Jones:

I'll tell him it's nothing personal," Guillen said. "Hey, I'll help him out if he needs my help. He's a good kid. But it doesn't change how I feel about it."

Jones got the start in left field Friday, having been officially added to the roster earlier in the day. Fourth outfielder Jason Ellison, a popular player among veteran Mariners and throughout the clubhouse, was designated for assignment.

"I can't control that side of the game," Jones told reporters when asked about Guillen and how his arrival could impact clubhouse chemistry. "All I can control is what I do on the field. I'm not going to say anything about anybody. I'm just going to go out and play."

Lower down at that link is this item on Eric O'Flaherty and his 7-0 start this season:

O'Flaherty couldn't help but laugh when he discussed his two-pitch outing Wednesday night that resulted in win No. 7 for him this season. That's a Mariners record to start a career and one more victory than Horacio Ramirez, the Mariners' starter, took into the game Friday.

O'Flaherty's propensity for picking up victories is becoming somewhat of a clubhouse joke.

But O'Flaherty says it's a tribute to the ability of Seattle's offense to come through with late runs.

Protection

From the Dayton Daily News:

Protection always the best game plan
It is the injury that provides the most pain, if not the worst consequences. How do we put this delicately? It is the injury that comes from being hit in the crotch.

It gets "better" from that lede.

Game Notes -- 8/3

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Dayton Dragons beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1. Keltavious Jones hit a pinch hit double to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. That game-winning hit came in Jones’ first at bat with the Dragons.

HOME RUN DROUGHTS OVER: Ron Garth gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a home run. The solo shot was Garth’s first home run since August 16, 2006. That homer was also the first by a Timber Rattler since Carlos Peguero went deep against South Bend on July 23. The homer drought was at 73-1/3 innings for Wisconsin.

GOOD START: Wisconsin starter Ricky Orta pitched five shutout innings, allowed one hit, struck out seven, and left with a 1-0 lead.

TIED UP: Drew Stubbs tripled to start the sixth inning against Rattler reliever Mike Wagner. With one out and the infield drawn in, Juan Francisco flared a single to right that barely made the outfield grass. Stubbs scored to even the game 1-1.

CHANCES WERE: Wisconsin got a lead off walk in the top of the seventh, but an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt was followed by a double play. Gavin Dickey drew a lead off walk in the eighth, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Leury Bonilla. But, Ramon Geronimo struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

SCARY END: Rattler right fielder Leury Bonilla crashed into the outfield wall trying to track down the line drive off the bat of Jones in the ninth. He then fell on to the warning track and remained down for several moments. Bonilla walked off the field on his own power and needed a few stitches in his chin.

STUCK ON ONE: The Rattlers scored one run in each of the three losses to the Dragons. After winning game one of the four game series 6-1, the Rattlers lost 2-1, 8-1, and 2-1.

ONE RUN RECORD: The Rattlers are 10-18 in games decided by one run this season.

ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER: The Rattles have only been shutout seven times this season. But, they have scored one run in a game 18 times. Wisconsin is 1-17 when they score just one run in a game. The lone win was a 1-0 win over Kane County on May 21.

STREAK ENDS: Rattler infielder Reed Eastley went 0-for-4 and saw his consecutive on base end streak end. Since June 12, Rattler infielder Reed Eastley had reached base in 38 consecutive games. This was the longest streak of its kind in the Midwest League this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Fort Wayne Wizards at the Midwest League affiliate of the San Diego Padres. They are 46-61 overall. The Wizards are 15-23 in the second half. That record puts them in 5th place in the Midwest League Eastern Division. Fort Wayne missed the playoffs in the first half. They went 1-3 against the Beloit Snappers at Memorial Stadium in their most recent series. Former major leaguer Doug Dascenzo is the manager of the Wizards.

THE SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 1-3 in the season series with the Wizards. The teams met at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium April 26-29. The Wizards won game one 3-1. Wisconsin took game two 12-4. Fort Wayne won the final two games of the series 9-3 and 11-10.

COMPARE & CONTRAST: The Rattlers have a team batting average of .240 (T-13th in the MWL) while the Wizards have a team average of .252 (T-8th). Fort Wayne has scored 426 runs (11th) compared to 392 (14th) scored by Wisconsin. Wizard hitters have 59 homers (10th), while the Rattlers have 46 (14th). The Fort Wayne pitching staff has an ERA of 4.33 (13th). Wisconsin’s hurlers have an ERA of 4.10 (T-10th).

PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA has three members of the current Fort Wayne roster on their list of top 30 list of Padre prospects. BA has rated Fort Wayne outfielder Cedric Hunter as the number one prospect in the San Diego organization. Pitchers Aaron Breit and Drew Miller are ranked as the 11th and 12th best prospects in the Padre organization.

OUT OF THE DRAFT: The Wizards have five members of San Diego’s 2007 draft class on their active roster and the top Padre pick of ’07 is on the Fort Wayne disabled list. Nick Schmidt, the 23rd overall pick of the 2007 draft, is on the DL. Pitcher Cory Luebke, a supplemental first round pick this year, is the scheduled starter on Monday. Pitchers Allen Harrington (13th round) and Brandon Gomes (17th round) are joined by catcher Luis Martinez (12th round) and outfielder Keith Conlon (14th round) on the Wizard roster.

OPPOSING STARTER: Drew Miller was a 37th round pick of the Padres in the 2005 draft out of Seminole State (OK) Junior College as a draft-and-follow. He went 5-1 with a 3.56 ERA as he split time between the Arizona League and the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League in 2006. In his last start for the Wizards, Miller took the loss against the Kane County Cougars on July 29. Miller allowed two runs on one hit with a walk, two hit batters, and seven strikeouts over five innings. This is Miller’s first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. In 2006, he faced the AZL Mariners two times and the Everett AquaSox twice. Miller is 1-0 with a 5.63 ERA against Mariner affiliates.

Bonilla update

Just got into Fort Wayne and first chance to post since te end of the game.

A pretty scary end to the game in Dayton on Thursday with Leury Bonilla almost running through a wall to try and make a catch. The ball dropped in, but Bonilla lay stunned on the warning track as the winning run scored in the bottom of the ninth.

Bonilla needed some stitches in his chin and not only did he hit the wall hard, but he hit the warning track hard after bouncing off the wall. But, he was on the bus and seemed about as good as he could be after something like that.

Will try to have more after we get to the stadium later today.

HOMER ROLL: Dayton got home runs from Justin Turner, Logan Parker, Juan Francisco, and Zack Cozart. The Dragons now have 81 home runs this season. They are second in the Midwest League in that category, behind only the 85 long balls hit by Cedar Rapids this season.

WIDE OPEN: Turner homered with two outs in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. The Dragons scored an unearned run in the fifth. Parker homered to start the sixth. Rattler starting pitcher Anthony Varvaro left the game with a runner at first and one out in the sixth. Eddy Rodriguez doubled home that runner for a 4-0 lead. Juan Francisco hit his third homer off Rattler pitching this season in the seventh inning for a 5-0 advantage.

FIRST TIMER: Cozartt’s three run homer, his third hit of the game, was in the bottom of the eighth inning and it was his first professional home run.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM: Catcher Israel Nunez joined the Timber Rattlers last night. He takes the place of Juan Beltran. Beltran was placed on the disabled list after being hit on the head by a pitch in the second inning of Tuesday’s game. Nunez was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mariners in 2005 out of Mexico. Nunez played for the Mariner team in the Dominican Summer League in 2005 and Seattle’s Venezuelan Summer League affiliate in 2006. He hit 324-3-12 in the VSL in ’06. Nunez started the 2007 season with the Arizona League Mariners and was hitting .277-0-3 in 16 games before joining the Timber Rattlers.

OPPOSING STARTER: Jamie Arneson was the 16th round pick of the Reds in the 2006 draft out of Bakersfield Community College. Jones to join Mariners this time, McLaren claims

It’s been rumored to be happening for months, it’s been falsely reported at least once and it’s been begged and pleaded for by Mariners fans. But finally it appears top prospect Adam Jones is being called up from Triple-A Tacoma to join the Mariners on Friday.

Seattle manager John McLaren included the news matter-of-factly in his postgame press conference, saying, “We’re calling up Jones,” in the midst of his postgame comments.

McLaren mentioned Jason Ellison as the likely person Jones would replace on the 25-man roster.

IN CONTROL: Butler did not walk a batter over five innings. Last night was the second time this season Butler has pitched five innings without walking a batter.

HIT BY PITCH: Rattler starting catcher Juan Beltran was hit in the head by a pitch from Rafael Gonzalez in the top of the second inning. He was replaced by Jair Fernandez in the bottom of the third inning.

HERE’S A STREAK: Since June 12, Rattler infielder Reed Eastley has reached base in 37 consecutive games. Eastley extended his streak with a walk in the top of the first inning last night. This is the longest streak of its kind in the Midwest League this season.

GOOD BYE, JULY: The Rattlers wrapped the month of July with an 8-18 record. The Rattlers hit .262 as a team in the month. Wisconsin pitchers had an ERA of 4.53.

OPPOSING STARTER: Alexander Smit was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins out of the Netherlands in 2002. He spent two seasons (2005 and 2006) with the Beloit Snappers. Baseball America rated Smit as the #15 prospect in the Minnesota organization before the start of 2007. Smit was on the Twins 40-man roster. The Reds claimed Smit off waivers when Minnesota tried to take him off the 40-man roster. Smit is 0-2 in two starts for the Dragons. Smit started the season with Fort Myers in the Florida State League and was 1-4 with a save and a 5.86ERA in 18 games (8 starts). Smit has faced the Rattlers four times (2 starts) in his career. He is 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA.

Realignment

MLive.com has this little nugget. Nothing that hasn't been mentioned before...except maybe for the MWL President referring to where travel is a pain...

Midwest commish: Consider realignment

George Spelius has no intention of letting the problems of another Class A minor league spill over into the Midwest League.

But Spelius, the Midwest League president, worries that Minor League Baseball might not like his solution.

Spelius said the problems of the low-Class A South Atlantic League --which is spread from south Georgia to New Jersey -- is having with travel are not something baseball's other two Class A leagues, the Midwest and Carolina Leagues, should also have to endure.

"If people don't realize baseball needs to cut down on travel, they should," said Spelius, the league's president since 1987. "Baseball at all minor league levels need a little realignment. But what needs to happen is that Major League Baseball needs to talk with the minors."

Spelius said his ideal solution would be for either one or both minor league teams in Lake County, Ohio, and Lexington, Kentucky, be asborbed into the Midwest League. That would help balance the Midwest League into truer East/West divisions. In the long run, those additions would limit travel in the league as teams would play more games in their own division.

Spelius said the current Midwest League setup of pairing six Eastern Division teams with eight Western Division clubs is "a pain in the butt.

#5 Ken Cloude

The countdown of best individual seasons in Timber Rattler history has reached #5

Ken Cloude - 1995

9-8, 3.24 ERA, 25 games started, 161 innings pitched, 137 hits allowed, 58 earned runs allowed, 63 walks, 140 strikeouts

Cloude was a workhorse for the Rattlers in their inaugural season, averaging over 6 1/3 innings pitched per start. His four complete games would be a team record, along with teammate Derek Bieniasz, until T.A. Fulmer topped it in 2003. His strikeouts, innings pitched, and ERA are all in the top 10 in Timber Rattler history.

Highlighted entry:
1978
The Braves trounce the Reds 16-4 and stop Pete Rose's record hitting streak at 44 games. Larry McWilliams and Gene Garber are the Atlanta pitchers. Rose goes 0-for-4. Rose's streak is the 2nd longest in ML history. He goes 70-for-182 during the skein‚ an average of .385. Rose grumbles about using a relief ace with an 11-run lead‚ "You would have thought it was the seventh game of the World Series‚" after Garber uses his best stuff to strike him out to end the game.

You'd think that Pete Rose was hyper-competitive with that quote.
