As Midwest League season wraps up, some Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will go straight to instructional league
"The 2009 season might be ending here in Wisconsin," Rattlers manager Jeff Isom said prior to Friday's 5-2 loss to Cedar Rapids at Fox Cities Stadium. "But 2010 starts."More at the link.

Next on the docket for a select few wearing Rattlers duds is instructional league, which will send players, coaches and minor league coordinators within the Milwaukee Brewers' organization to their spring training complex in Phoenix for further, well, instruction.
"I love it," said Brewers roving infield instructor Garth Iorg, in town for Friday's game. "That's kind of the rovers' thing. And to get invited to go to instructional league for the players is a nice thing. (It means) we think highly of them because there are limited spaces. It helps them get prepared to perform at a higher level for the next season."
Isom said instructional league often involves an organization's upper-tier prospects and allows for more one-on-one tutelage than would be possible during a season.
For example, Rattlers shortstop Josh Prince, selected by the Crew in the third round of June's annual draft, will be on hand and asked to work on transferring the ball to a slightly higher position while also tweaking his overall fielding mechanics.

Left-hander Bobby Livingston was traded by the Cleveland Indians to the Pittsburgh Pirates today [September 1] for cash considerations.Vagabond? That might be understating it.
Livingston, who will turn 27 on Thursday, signed a minor-league deal with the Indians after being released by the Baltimore Orioles on July 3.
Livingston went 2-5 with a 5.59 ERA in nine starts for Double-A Akron. He also pitched three innings at Triple-A Columbus, giving up six hits and four runs.
Livingston has been a baseball vagabond since being drafted in the fourth round in 2001 by Seattle. He went to Tampa Bay on waivers in 2006 and was immediately traded to Philadelphia. Major League Baseball voided the deal, however, ruling that the Rays had acquired Livingston for the sole purpose of passing him on to the Phillies. He went on waivers and was claimed by Cincinnati. He signed a minor-league deal as a free agent with Baltimore last January.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers lost 4-3 to the Kernels last night. Cedar Rapids scored twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Four Kernels pitchers held Wisconsin to one earned run on four hits to beat the Rattlers.
WITHOUT A HIT: Wisconsin scored the first run of the game with a little help from the Kernels. Sean McCraw reached on an error to start the third inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. McCraw took third on a passed ball and also scored on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.
ORIGIN OF SCORING: Darwin Perez hit his second homer of the season, a two-out, two-run shot in the top of the fourth inning to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead. Perez has 40 RBI this season. Eleven of his ’09 RBIs are in 14 games against Wisconsin.
MAKE IT FOUR: Roberto Lopez drove in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run single. That put the Kernels up 4-1.
SETTING THE TABLE: Just before Lopez drove in the two runs, Tyson Auer and Alexi Amarista pulled a double steal to move up to third and second. The Kernels lead the Midwest League in steals with 181. They are 35-for-47 in stolen base attempts against the Timber Rattlers this season.
CLOSER: Derrick Alfonso’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth pulled Wisconsin to within 4-2.
ENDGAME: The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning for Josh Prince. Prince hit a line drive to right-center. Angel Castillo ranged over to make the catch for the second out as Alfonso tagged and scored on the play. But, the runner at second was too far from second and was doubled up after Alfonso scored to end the game.
PITCHER’S MOUND QUARTET: Christian Scholl (3IP), Mike Rocco (2IP), Nick Pugliese (IP), and Vladimir Veres (3IP) were the pitchers last night for Cedar Rapids. Rocco got the win in his Kernels debut and Veras picked up his eleventh save. Wisconsin drew eight walks, but struck out 10 times against the four Cedar Rapids hurlers.
PLAYER MOVES: McCraw was placed on the disabled list today. Shawn Zarraga has been transferred from Helena to take McCraw’s place on the roster. Zarraga started the season with Wisconsin.

He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out five over six innings. Chatwood is 4-3 with a 4.11 ERA in 12 second half starts. He has made three appearances against the Timber Rattlers this season. On June 2 at Time Warner Cable Field, Chatwood tossed 5-2/3 scoreless innings and picked up the victory in a 1-0 Kernels win. Chatwood allowed two hits, walked six, and struck out seven. He beat the Rattlers at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids on August 11. He tossed six shutout innings and allowed two hits and walked two while striking out six. His last time out against the Rattlers was on August 21 in Grand Chute. He pitched 6-2/3 shutout innings and allowed just two hits while walking four and striking out six. Chatwood has walked 61 batters this season and is tied for third in the Midwest League for the most walks issued by a pitcher in 2009.

He has made three appearances against the Timber Rattlers this season. On June 2 at Time Warner Cable Field, Chatwood tossed 5-2/3 scoreless innings and picked up the victory in a 1-0 Kernels win. Chatwood allowed two hits, walked six, and struck out seven. He beat the Rattlers at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids on August 11. He tossed six shutout innings and allowed two hits and walked two while striking out six. His last time out against the Rattlers was on August 21 in Grand Chute. Chatwood has walked 61 batters this season and is tied for third in the Midwest League for the most walks issued by a pitcher in 2009.

The last time the Peoria Chiefs were at O’Brien Field for an eight-game homestand, pitcher Aaron Shafer dominated both of his starts.@Quad Cities 2, Beloit 1 (12 innings): Burlington's 2-1 win over Clinton eliminated postseason possibilities for Quad-Cities about 50 minutes before the River Bandits edged Beloit 2-1 in 12 innings. By the time Jason Stidham scored D'Marcus Ingram with a gap-splitting double to left center with two outs in the bottom of the Bandits' second consecutive 12-inning game, Quad-Cities already was looking forward.

There was some construction work near the radio station down in Oshkosh today.
Long story short...well, I'll let this part of the e-mail from the Chief Engineer of the radio group fill you in on the situation...
A construction crew cut the main phone line cable running through by the studios. The bank was out (they closed and went home early), we are out, Walmart is out. It was a pretty major cable.
The last I heard was it would be operational by 9 PM. Obviously it could be sooner though.
Sorry, I just found out about this and I do not believe that we will have a broadcast tonight -- at least for the first six or seven innings. I'll set up a live blog and you can follow it here. Or, here is the link to John Rodgers and the Cedar Rapids Kernels internet broadcast.

THE DON: Frederickson transferred to the University of San Francisco for his junior season. He was 5-3 with a 4.54 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) for the Diamond Dons. Frederickson walked 61 batters and struck out 109 over 75-1/3 innings for USF.
THE HOKIE: Frederickson began his college career at Virginia Tech. He compiled a 2-4 record and struck out 68 batters in 56-2/3 innings for the Hokies.

LAST ACTION: The Timber Rattlers beat the Kane County Cougars 2-0 at Elfstrom Stadium on August 31. Maverick Lasker pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits in his Timber Rattlers debut.
MAVERICK! Lasker, a 5th round pick of the Brewers in the 2008 draft, had been 5-1 in the Arizona League before his promotion. The right-hander matched his professional high for innings pitched in a game. He is scheduled to start again at Beloit on Saturday night.
RITCHIE RICH: Brandon Ritchie worked the final two innings to finish off the shutout. He allowed two hits and struck out one to earn his fourth save of the season.
ANY WAY TO GET THOSE RUNS IN: Josh Prince reached on an error to start the game. He went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.
AND AGAIN: Michael Vass singled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to drive in an insurance run.
WELL, THAT’S OVER: The victory over the Cougars ended Wisconsin’s nine-game losing streak to Kane County. Monday was the first win over the Cougars since the first game of a doubleheader on June 20.

In 2009, Scholl is 3-2 with a 3.68ERA in 43 appearances (3 starts) for the Kernels. Scholl’s last start for the Kernels was on May 1 against the West Michigan Whitecaps. He tossed five innings, allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Scholl’s last outing before tonight was on August 29 against the Peoria Chiefs. He tossed three scoreless and hitless innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Scholl has made five relief appearances against the Timber Rattlers this season. MAVERICK! Lasker, a 5th round pick of the Brewers in the 2008 draft, had been 5-1 in the Arizona League before his promotion. The right-hander matched his professional high for innings pitched in a game. He is scheduled to start again at Beloit on Saturday night.
RITCHIE RICH: Brandon Ritchie worked the final two innings to finish off the shutout. He allowed two hits and struck out one to earn his fourth save of the season.
ANY WAY TO GET THOSE RUNS IN: Josh Prince reached on an error to start the game. He went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.
AND AGAIN: Michael Vass singled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to drive in an insurance run.
WELL, THAT’S OVER: The victory over the Cougars ended Wisconsin’s nine-game losing streak to Kane County. Monday was the first win over the Cougars since the first game of a doubleheader on June 20.
AND SO IS THAT: The Rattlers completed their nine-game road trip to Burlington and Kane County with a 1-7 record and one rainout. Wisconsin has three road games left this season and they have a record of 21-44 away from Time Warner Cable Field.
AUGUST NUMBERS: Wisconsin went 11-18 in 29 games during August. The team hit .233 and had an ERA of 4.25 during the month. Cody Scarpetta and Daniel Meadows each had two wins during the month to lead the team in victories. Scarpetta had an ERA of 1.95 in five games (four starts). Brock Kjeldgaard was the leading hitter for the month with a .319 average, three home runs, and 14 RBI.
BACK HOME AGAIN: The Rattlers wrap up their 2009 home schedule with three games against the Kernels. Wisconsin is 37-31 at Time Warner Cable Field.
PLAYER MOVES: Scarpetta and infielder Mike Brownstein were promoted to Huntsville yesterday. Brandon Sizemore, a 30th round pick by Milwaukee in the 2009 draft out of the College of Charleston, was promoted to Wisconsin from the Arizona League affiliate of the Brewers.
SOMETHING ABOUT ATTENDANCE: The Timber Rattlers are at 238,852 in 65 home games this season to set a new single season attendance record. If the Rattlers draw 11,148 fans over the final three games of the season, they will hit 250,000 for the season.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels are the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Cedar Rapids is in the Midwest League playoffs as the first half Wild Card in the Western Division. The Kernels were 40-30 in the second half. They are 33-29 in the second half to give them an overall record of 73-59.

If there is one thing the South Bend Silver Hawks can take from the way they finish the 2009 Midwest League season, it's honing the fight within.
Coming off a four-game sweep at Great Lakes, South Bend came out swinging against Lansing Tuesday night.
The Silver Hawks erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning and added another three runs in the seventh inning for a 6-3 minor-league baseball victory against Lansing.
South Bend owns a 1 1/2-game lead over Dayton for the final playoff spot in the Midwest League's Eastern Division. South Bend (30-34) travels to Dayton (28-35) for three games, then returns home to play Lansing in the season's final two games. The Silver Hawks' magic number — any combination of South Bend wins and Dayton losses — is five.
Milwaukee Brewers Report: Games of September 1, 2009
MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 64-67; 3rd National League Central): The Brewers lost 7-6 at St. Louis. Milwaukee had a 3-0 lead, but could not hold it. Matt Holliday hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie.
NASHVILLE (AAA: 72-66; 2nd Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds lost 9-1 to Memphis. The Redbirds scored seven runs in the third inning. Nashville trails Memphis by a ½ game in the division race.
HUNTSVILLE (AA: 63-70 overall, 25-39 second half; 4th Southern League North Division): The Stars lost 1-0 to Birmingham. Huntsville had six hits in the game.
BREVARD COUNTY (High-A: 76-47 overall, 36-23 second half; 2nd Florida State League North Division): The Manatees lost 4-3 in seventeen innings at Clearwater. Brevard County scored twice in the eighth inning to tie the game 2-2. Both teams scored runs in the fourteenth inning. Clearwater scored with one out in the seventeenth to end the game at the five hour mark.

The Cedar Rapids Kernels are making some moves today. Did I say some? I meant a boatload...
Cedar Rapids is in town for three games starting on Wednesday.
You can expect the Cedar Rapids Kernels to receive five players from the Arizona Rookie League Angels and other places in the parent Angels’ farm system sometime today.
It is believed outfielder Mike Trout, one of the Los Angeles Angels‘ No. 1 draft picks this past June, is one of those coming to town.
Manager Bill Mosiello would not say after Monday night’s game against Peoria who the players are joining his club or who they are replacing, though a couple of guys are headed to the disabled list. He hopes the newbies all will be here in time to make the trip Wednesday to Wisconsin for the final three-game road series of the Midwest League season. Reliever Francis Cabrera said Monday night he is going to Double-A Arkansas to pitch.
Cedar Rapids is in town for three games starting on Wednesday.

Dayton’s loss was 7-3 to Lansing, and the Lugnuts can help the Dragons tonight with a game at South Bend, moved from Saturday so as not to conflict with Notre Dame’s football opener against Nevada.@Great Lakes 6, South Bend 4: One big inning was all the Great Lakes Loons needed Monday to sweep the South Bend Silver Hawks. After going down in order in the first two innings, the Loons scored six times on five hits, a walk, and two South Bend errors in the third to pave the way for a 6-4 win at Dow Diamond -- giving Great Lakes a four-game sweep and a five-game winning streak.
That three-game series resumes Sunday. In between are South Bend’s three games with the Dragons, which Dayton probably has to sweep to be able to host a real playoff game.
“We’re lucky we have a second chance,” Dragons manager Todd Benzinger said. “They just swept us in four games up there, and I haven’t seen us play well in big situations.
“But we can sweep them. Things are in our control.”
