Hank Aaron hits the 755th‚ and last‚ HR of his career‚ connecting off Dick Drago of the California Angels. Jerry Augustine wins for the Brewers‚ 6-2.

There is a story at JSonline.com about placing a plaque at the spot where #755 landed. Below is the picture that went along with that story. Here are Hammerin' Hank's comments from the occasion:

"I had a nice career, so I'm satisfied."

Game Notes -- 7/19

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were held scoreless in the top of the first inning. Then, the rain started. Just before the start of the bottom of the first inning, the tarp was put on the field. After just over an hour, the game was ruled suspended.

TODAY’S GROUND RULES: The Snappers are coming to the plate in a 0-0 game in the bottom of the first inning. The suspended game is scheduled for nine innings. After a thirty minute break between games, a seven-inning game will be played.

THIS WILL BE ODD: Steve Richard was the scheduled starter on Wednesday night. He only tossed a few warm up pitches before the delay, but Kyle Parker will come on in relief in the bottom of the first inning. Richard is scheduled to make the start in the second game today. If he does go in that game, Richard will get credit for starts in two straight games.

FOR THE SNAPPERS: Brian Kirwan, who made the start for Beloit last night, will return to the mound for the second inning when the Timber Rattlers bat. Cole Devries, the originally scheduled starter for the Snappers tonight, will be the starter in game two.

PROMOTED: The Seattle Mariners promoted Timber Rattler starting pitcher Nathan Adcock to the High Desert Mavericks the California League after the game last night. Adcock will stay on the Rattler roster until tomorrow. No roster move for the Rattlers was announced.

OPPOSING STARTER: Brian Kirwan was the 11th round pick of the Twins in the 2005 draft out of Santa Fe Christian High School in Solona Beach, California. He did not pitch professionally in 2005. Kirwan went 5-5 with a 5.63 ERA in 13 starts for Elizabethton in the Appalachian League in 2006. He was rated as the 14th best prospect in the Appalachian League by Baseball America. Kirwan joined the Snappers in late May and has made nine starts since then. Tonight will be his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. In his last start, Kirwan got a no decision at West Michigan on July 12. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 6-1/3 innings. Kirwan struck out eight and walked one. The Whitecaps hit a pair of home runs off him that game. Kirwan has not won since a start on June 3 at Peoria.

OPPOSING STARTER GAME TWO: Cole Devries was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota in August of 2006. He did not pitch professionally in 2006, but was 7-3 with a 2.42ERA for the Golden Gophers and earned second team All-Big Ten honors before signing with the Twins. In his start prior to tonight, Devries allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings in a no decision against the West Michigan Whitecaps on July 13. He faced the Rattlers on April 17 in Grand Chute. Devries got a no decision and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 4-1/3 innings.

Promotion

Now for some real news...

Seattle has promoted starting pitcher Nathan Adcock to the California League. It sounds like he will still be on the Rattler roster until tomorrow, but he left for High Desert last night.

When there is a corresponding move for the Rattlers to announce, it will be anounced.

I should have stopped a couple of posts ago...

Apparently, this is post number 3,001. The number of posts on this blog have now passed the number of hits Roberto Clemente had in his major league career.

Sorry about that.

Actually, 3,001 posts or 30,001 posts here don't compare to the great Clemente. Might as well keep going, right?

Hey, Ernie. What do you say?

Let's play two today!

This gave me an idea...

Scary, I know.

After reading all of the Ryne Sandberg stories on the websites different Midwest League newspapers, including the one below from the South Bend Tribune the other day, I thought...well, really, I said, to myself: Someone should collect all of the Sandberg stories into one post and compare them....Just for kicks. Guess what the next project to get a mention here only to be forgotten until it's too late....Anyway, stop me if you've heard this one before...

No luxuries in minor leagues for ex-Cub great Sandberg

This might be Class A ball, and Ryne Sandberg might be a Cubbie blueblood above this sort of slumming, but he does not seek or receive any special treatment.

As manager of the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League, Sandberg works for everything he gets.

Take, for example, the four times he has been ejected this season -- twice his total in 16 years as a mild-mannered player. Those were not the itchy reactions of grandstanding young umpires anxious to toss a legend.

The click is worth it just for the picture that accompanies the story. Midwest League announcers and some front office workers will recognize the guy in the background.

Play spot the differences with these to pictures. It's what I did after the game got suspended last night.

Or, Windows & Doors in this case. I hope the idiot that drives that car doesn't bring it through the window tonight.

Thursday Motivation (7/19)

From despair.com...

Wednesday Movie Quote...

On a Thursday...I know, I know...

Steve Nebraska: Al, you're like a dad to me.

Al Percolo: But I'm not your dad. I'm just a guy taking 15 percent.

Steve Nebraska: I thought it was 10.

Midwest League News & Notes

Look who might be coming back to the Midwest League.

Former overall No. 1 pick may come back - as pitcher

Matt Bush, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 draft, is likely headed back to the Wizards in two weeks, according to Grady Fuson, San Diego’s vice president of scouting and player development. This time, he’ll return as a pitcher.

“The plan all along was once we got him on the mound and once we saw where he was from a delivery standpoint and a command standpoint, we thought this would be the place he would kick it off,” said Fuson, who was in attendance for Wednesday’s game at Memorial Stadium.

Odd jobs and Myron Noodleman helped Bobby Livingston?

Parker cleans shoes, while Noodleman brings good luck

Dragons first baseman Logan Parker's hand-written note on the clubhouse bulletin board advertised he would clean anyone's cleats for $2 a pair.

When there were no takers, he lowered the price to $1. So far, shortstop Zack Cozart and pitcher Kevin Gunter are his clients.
...
Noodleman said he performed with outfielder (and former Dragons player) Cody Strait in Sarasota last year, and Strait hit a home run. Last week, he worked with pitcher Bobby Livingston at Louisville, the day before Livingston was recalled to the Reds.

Myron, the good luck charm. Maybe he can work that into his act.

This will turn your week around.

Whitecaps welcome 6 millionth fan

Dorothy Metzler, who cringes whenever she is advised to slow down, definitely is on a roll.

The 89-year-old Grand Haven woman escaped serious injury when she was involved in an accident that totaled her car, then collected $300 playing bingo Monday.

But walking away from an accident without a scratch and padding the bank account took a back seat to her first West Michigan Whitecaps game Tuesday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

She carted home more than $1,000 worth of prizes after being named the 6 millionth fan in the Whitecaps' 14-year history. The loot included a digital camera, a microwave, a George Foreman grill, a blender, a fondue pot, a vacuum and two tickets to the upcoming Counting Crows concert at Fifth Third Ballpark.

"It's been a lucky week," Metzler said. "I can't wait for what's going to happen next."

Your going to a Counting Crows concert, nanna. That's what is happening next!

There is a Leminari on Zeta Reticulon IV who may disagree with the youngster in our next story.

'Luckiest person in the universe'

SOUTH BEND -- Bobby Wantuch, 11, received some bad news Monday.

He has to wear glasses from now on.

"He was a little bummed about it," his father, Bobby Wantuch Sr., said.

But Bobby's day took a 180-degree turn when he became the 4 millionth minor league baseball fan to enter Coveleski Stadium.

It didn't take anyone's glasses after that to see the big smile Bobby cracked when he was congratulated and handed balloons at the turnstile. He was the 429th fan to walk through the gates Monday. He lifted his arms in the air like he had just delivered the game-winning hit in the seventh game of the World Series.

"I feel like I'm the luckiest person in the universe because I won," the South Bend boy said. "I'm surprised because I never won anything before."

Think he'll ever win anything again?

Too dark?

Suspended Game

No more Rattler baseball tonight.

Tonight's game has been suspended after the top of the first. It will be picked up in the bottom of the first inning on Thursday night at 4:30pm CDT. A 7-inning game will follow the completion of the suspended game.

Kyle Parker, who was originally scheduled to start on Thursday, will come on in relief of Steve Richard for game one. It sounds like Richard, who did not even throw a pitch tonight, but did warmup in the bullpen and just before the tarp went on the field in the bottom of the first, may get the start in the 7-inning game.

HOWEVER, that is still up in the air. If I find out more, I will let you know. As for right now...back to the hotel to work on some things.

Raining in Beloit. Three of the most depressing words in the English Language. Regnen in Beloit may be three of the most depressing words in that usually cheerful language...German.

This may be a bit revisionist of me, because I remember liking this Walter Lantz creation...But, man, is Woody Woodpecker a jerk.

Game Notes -- 7/18

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Beloit Snappers beat the Timber Rattlers 4-3. Chris Parmelee drew a bases loaded walk to force in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Rattler starting pitcher Ricky Orta struck out a career-high ten batters over six innings, but got a no decision. The loss was Wisconsin’s ninth straight.

EARLY LEADS: An RBI double by Joe White in the top of the fourth gave the Rattler a 1-0 lead. Beloit tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a homer by Danny Berg. Wisconsin went back in front on an RBI double Kuo Hui Lo in the top of the fifth.

CHANCE TO PAD: Beloit reliever Jose Lugo walked the first three Rattler batters of the top of the sixth inning. Matt Williams relieved Lugo and struck out Alex Liddi. Jamie McOwen singed in a run for a 3-1 advantage. Then, Williams got Jair Fernandez to ground in to a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

SNAPPING TO IT: Matt Betsill homered in the bottom of the sixth to get Beloit to within a run.

A DECADE OF SERVICE: Orta is the first Timber Rattler pitcher to strike out ten batters in a game this season. The last time a Rattler pitcher reached double digits in strikeouts was when Ruben Flores struck out ten Peoria Chiefs on June 24, 2006.

ELEVENTH: Keith Renaud relieved Orta in the bottom of the seventh inning and walked the lead off batter. One out later, an RBI single by Wilson Ramos tied the game. Renaud was charged with a blown save, the eleventh blown save by Rattler pitchers this season.

NUMBER NINE: The Rattlers have lost nine straight games. This streak matches their longest losing streak of the season. Wisconsin lost nine straight from June 2 through June 11 in the first half of the season.

BUT: The Rattlers have had leads in six of those nine losses.

HOME SOON: The Rattlers are 0-7 on their current road trip. They have this four game series at Beloit before returning home on Saturday night to host the South Bend Silver Hawks.

BOBBY!!

Livingston earns another start

ATLANTA - The phone in Bobby Livingston's hotel room rang Tuesday morning and the left-hander jumped.

Just because he pitched well on Monday didn't guarantee he wouldn't be finding his way to Louisville - Livingston didn't give up an earned run or an extra base hit in 6 2/3 innings in Colorado last month and he still found a ticket to Louisville greeting him.

So when the phone rang on Tuesday morning, the fact that he'd improved to 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA following Monday's victory over the Braves did little to calm the rookie's nerves.

It turned out not to be a return to the minor leagues, but a wrong number.

Livingston can rest easy for the next couple of days - he's penciled in to start Saturday's game in Florida. If he does well then, he could make his Great American Ball Park debut on July 24 against the Milwaukee Brewers. Although Livingston is in his third stint with the Reds, he's only spent a single day in the clubhouse at Great American Ball Park.

Remember, Bobby pitched against Rickie Weeks, Prince Fielder, and Tony Gwyn, Jr in 2003 when they were in Beloit and Livingston was a Rattler. Should be interesting if that happens at the major league level.
