So...
Mehring is still getting things together here this morning. He had to wrap up the SportsBubbler.com column. The bus getting in at 1:30 didn't help matters. But, it could have been worse. If we stuck around Burlington to try to get that game in, the bus may not have been in until 3:30 or 4:00 this morning and he would still be sleeping.
He said something about early lunch and getting to work on the blog after that.

Appleton 14-year-olds beat North Syracuse, N.Y., to advance to semifinals of the Babe Ruth World Series at USA Youth Sports Complex
It has been a fairy tale week for the 14-year-old Appleton Babe Ruth baseball team. Serving as host of the World Series, it had found its way into the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Thursday night against North Syracuse.The semifinal game tonight is against Youngstown, Ohio at 8:00pm
By game's end, Appleton was still living a storybook existence.
A bases-loaded, two-out throwing error allowed Appleton to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh against North Syracuse, and the home team then scored the winning run on a bunt in the eighth that drew another overthrow to first in an improbable 5-4 comeback victory.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Burlington beat the Timber Rattlers 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Trey Watten allowed one run over seven innings for Wisconsin. Manauris Baez gave up one run and struck out seven over six innings. Neither starter was involved in the decision.
SCRATCHING FOR RUNS: Burlington scored their first run in the third innings. Norris singled with two outs and a runner at second to drive in the run. The Rattlers tied the game with an RBI double by Derrick Alfonso in the top o the sixth.
PICKING THEM OFF: Watten picked two runners off base in last night’s game. The righty caught Shawn Griffin at first base in the second inning. Watten caught Norris too far away from second base in the bottom of the sixth inning.
THIS IS MY PLACE: Watten had pitched 15 innings against the Bees at Community Field this season. He has allowed one run on six hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

MILWAUKEE (MAJ: 61-65; T-3rd National League Central): The Brewers lost 4-3 in 10 innings to the Reds. Jody Gerut and Prince Fielder homered in a three-run fifth inning to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. But, the Reds rallied to tie the game in the eighth and win it in the tenth.
NASHVILLE (AAA: 68-63; 2nd Pacific Coast League American North Division): The Sounds were suspended 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning at Round Rock.

LONE STAR ALL-STAR: Watten was a First Team All-Lone Star Conference South Division selection as both a pitcher and a utility player in 2007. Watten also played shortstop for the Wildcats.

END OF THE SUSPENSE: The Bees beat the Rattlers 2-1 in the conclusion of the game that was suspended on July 7. Patrick Norris tripled with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and Fernando Garcia drove him in with a single to break a 1-1 tie. Justin Garcia pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the win.
REGULARLY SCHEDULED: The Rattlers grabbed a 3-0 lead with three straight RBI singles in the top of the first inning. But, the Bees scored in each of the first five innings to go up 10-3.
SURGE: Erik Komatsu, Jose Duran, and Sean McCraw each had two-out, RBI singles in the top of the first inning. Michael Vass also singled with two outs in the inning, but McCraw was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
COUNTER-SURGE: An error allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the first inning. Then, Ryan Wood homered to lead off the second inning to tie the game. Burlington scored another run in the third on an error and Wood followed with a three-run homer. The Bees tacked on two more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.

Baez is 7-5 with a save and a 3.68ERA in 27 games (17 starts) for the Bees this season. In his start prior to this evening, Baez won his second straight start with a victory at Quad Cities on August 21. He allowed three runs on eight hits over 5-2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Baez has made two appearances (one start) against Wisconsin this season. Baez has pitched five innings against the Rattlers, allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits, walked six, and struck out two.
