ABOUT MONDAY: The Lansing Lugnuts completed a three-game sweep of the Timber Rattlers with a 6-4 win yesterday afternoon. Kenny Wilson singled in two runs with a bases loaded single in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 4-3 Rattler lead.
IT STARTED EARLY: Lansing scored three times in the first inning. There were three hits and two errors that led to the early runs off Timber Rattler starting pitcher Wily Peralta. Lansing scored first in all three games of the series with Wisconsin.
COMEBACK: Wisconsin got a run in the bottom of the first inning. Then, Erik Miller hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Wisconsin up 4-3.
FIRST TIME? Miller’s line drive over the left field wall was his first professional home run.
LAUNCHING PAD OR ON PAR? Wisconsin has hit six homers at Time Warner Cable Field this season. Opponents have also hit six to make 12 homers hit in the first 15 games in the stadium. Last season, there were 27 homers hit by the Rattlers at home and opponents hit 31 here for a total of 58 in 64 games.
NOT FOR LONG: The Lugnuts loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an error in the top of the sixth inning against Cody Adams. Adams got the first out on a force play at the plate, but Wilson delivered his single to put the Lugnuts up by a run.
RUNNING GAME: Lansing was 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts against Wisconsin until Sean McCraw threw out Wilson to complete a strike-‘em out, throw-‘em out double play in the sixth. McCraw also threw out another would-be base stealer in the eighth.
TO ERR: The Rattlers committed six errors in the three-game set with the Lugnuts. Those six errors led to five unearned runs.
IT GOES TO NINE: Juan Sanchez singled in the first inning yesterday to extend his hitting streak to nine games. He is 18-for-39 (.462) during the streak. Sanchez has tied Miller for the longest hitting streak on the Timber Rattlers this season.
HOMESTAND SO FAR: The Rattlers are 2-4 in the first six games of their current nine-game homestand. They have been outscored 41-31 and have been outhit 62-60.
UNCHARTED TERRITORY: The sweep at the hands of the Lugnuts has dropped the Rattlers to 9-14 on the season. This marks the first time this season Wisconsin has been five games under .500.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Burlington Bees are the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. They are the defending Midwest League Champions. Burlington missed the playoffs in the first half of 2008, but won the Western Division Second Half title with a record of 43-26. They went 6-0 in the Midwest League Playoffs in 2008. Manager Jim Gabella is back with Burlington after one season as the manager of Kansas City’s Pioneer League affiliate in Idaho Falls. Gabella had been Burlington’s manager from 2004-2007. The Bees are 7-16 to start the 2009 season. In their most recent series, the Bees dropped two out of three to West Michigan at home. The final two games – a win and a loss – went 10 innings.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .246 as a team. They have scored 97 runs (4.2/game) and hit ten home runs. The Bees are hitting .204 as a team. They have scored 74 runs (3.2/game) and hit eight homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.79 while allowing a total of 127 runs (5.5/game). Burlington pitchers have a team ERA of 4.38 while allowing 113 runs (4.9/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 30 errors. The Bees defense has committed 22 errors. Wisconsin is 8-7 at Time Warner Cable Field this season. The Bees are 4-6 away from Community Field this season.
PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook listed six members of the current Burlington roster on its list of top 30 prospects in the Royals organization. Eric Hosmer is the highest ranked player at #2. Pitcher Kelvin Herrera is next at #12. Catchers Salvador Perez (#19) and Jose Bonilla (#26); infielder Kyle Martin (#27) and pitcher Sam Runion (#28) are also on the list.
OUT OF THE DRAFT 2008: The Royals have placed six members of their 2008 draft class on the current Bees roster. Hosmer was Kansas City’s #1 pick in 2008. Hosmer was also the third player selected in last year’s draft. Infielder J.D. Alfaro was a ninth round pick and is the only other top ten pick from ’08 on the Burlington roster. Alfaro is also the only other non-pitcher from the 2008 draft currently with the Bees. Pitchers Derrick Saito (16th), Blaine Hardy (22nd), Carson Bryant (25th), and James Thompson (38th) were all selected by the Royals last year.
RETURNING ALUMNI: There are 10 players on the current Burlington roster that spent at least some time with the Bees in 2008. Pitchers Barry Bowden, Brent Fisher, Herrera, Zach Peterson, and Runion; infielders Antonio Jimenez, Martin, and Alwin Perez; and outfielders Nick Francis and Wilson Tucker were all Bees last season. Bowden, Fisher, Herrera, Peterson, Martin, and Francis were all on the playoff roster for the 2008 Midwest League Champions.
BURLINGTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Manauris Baez was signed by the Royals as a minor league free agent in March, 2008. He had originally been signed by the New York Yankees and spent two seasons playing for the Dominican Summer League Yankees. Last season, Baez pitched for Burlington in the Appalachian League and was 2-2 with a save and a 2.89ERA in 15 games (three starts). He walked 10 and struck out 35 in 37-1/3 innings pitched. Baez has made six appearances (one start) for the Bees in 2009. In his one start – at Clinton on April 28 – Baez pitched four scoreless innings and allowed five hits. In his last appearance, Baez gave up three runs on five hits over 1-1/3 innings against West Michigan on May 2. Tonight is the first time Baez has faced the Rattlers and an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

"Trying to find an edge. It's different for each guy. But it's something they don't think is a reality, and they're going to get bagged if that's the road they go down."

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber cracked 17 hits for a new season high, but the Lansing Lugnuts beat the Rattlers 8-6.
A PRETTY GOOD DAY: Juan Sanchez and Brett Lawrie both went 4-for-5 for the Rattlers yesterday. Sanchez had four singles and scored two runs. Lawrie had three singles, a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
NEVER IN FRONT: Lansing scored first on a Mike McDade homer in the second. The Rattlers tied the game in the third only to have the Lugnuts go in front again with three runs in the fourth. The Rattlers answered with two in their half of the fourth inning. But, Yohermyn Chavez homered in the top of the fifth and the Lugnuts tacked on another run for a 6-3 lead. Lansing added runs in the sixth and eighth innings and Wisconsin got a run in the eight to make the score 8-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
YEAH, HE’S GOOD: Chavez hit his Midwest League leading fifth homer yesterday. He continues to lead the league in slugging percentage (.667) and runs scored (19). He is also tied for the league lead in extra base hits (13).
MAKING IT INTERESTING: After the first Rattler of the ninth inning was retired, Lansing reliever Yorman Mayora gave up three straight singles to Sanchez, Lawrie, and Brock Kjeldgaard to load the bases. He walked Corey Kemp to force in a run.
MAKING IT REALLY INTERESTING: Matt Daly relieved Mayora and uncorked a wild pitch with Michael Vass at the plate to allow Lawrie to score and make the score 8-6 with the tying runs in scoring position.
DARN IT: Another Daly pitch got away with Vass at the plate and Kjeldgaard tried to score. But, catcher Jon Talley got to the ball and flipped to Daly covering the plate to retire Kjeldgaard for the second out. Daly would walk Vass, but he got the final out.
ADVENTURES IN BASE RUNNING: The Timber Rattlers had a pair of runners thrown out at home plate and one thrown out at third base in Sunday’s game. Lansing outfielders have seven outfield assists this season. Right fielder Markus Brisker is tied for the Midwest League lead in outfield assists with four.
CLIMBING TO EIGHT: Sanchez extended his hitting streak to eight games with his 4-for-5 day on Sunday. He is 17-for-34 (.500) during the streak. When the streak began on April 25, Sanchez was hitting .174. He has raised his average to .375 and is currently third in the Midwest League batting race.
WEREN’T THEY STRUGGLING? Lansing entered this series scoring three runs a game, a team batting average of .223, and a 5-16 record. In the first two games of this series – both wins, the Lugnuts have score 19 runs and 21 hits.

Anderson spent most of his first pro season with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays where he went 1-3 with two saves over 16 relief appearances. He walked eight and struck out 22 in 25 innings in the GCL. Anderson made one relief appearance for Auburn in the New York-Penn League and did not allow a run over 1-1/3 innings. In his start prior to today, Anderson allowed one run on seven hits over four innings at West Michigan on April 28. He walked one and struck out two in a no decision against the Whitecaps. Today is the first time Anderson is facing the Rattlers or an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hours before the Quad-Cities River Bandits began the start of their first extended road trip of the season with a game at Clinton on Saturday, crews began replacing all the infield grass as well as the grass in foul territory and 10 feet behind the back lip of the infield.One to go:
It is scheduled to be replaced in time for Friday's home game with Cedar Rapids.
"The result will make it a better surface to play on, make it look better for fans, and provide truer hops and bounces for the players who are playing on it,'' River Bandits general manager Kirk Goodman said. ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Great lakes Loons 6-4. Jose Duran and Juan Sanchez both had three hits for the Rattler offense. Duran also drove in three runs. Wisconsin took two out of three from Great Lakes in the just completed series.
I CAN DODGE BULLETS, BABY: Rattler starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta walked three batters of the first four batters he faced in the top of the first inning last night. He got out of the inning with a pop out and a strikeout.
A VIEW TO A KILL: Duran, the sixth round pick of the Brewers in the 2008 draft, tripled in the third inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sean McCraw to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, with the bases loaded, two outs, and the Rattlers leading 3-2, Duran smacked a two-run single and the Rattlers went up 5-2.
WEIRD PLAY OF THE NIGHT: The Rattlers collected five hits in the third inning, but only scored two runs. Wisconsin had a 2-0 lead with one out, Cutter Dykstra at second and Juan Sanchez at first. Brett Lawrie lined a pitch from Loons starter Nathan Eovaldi to the gap in right-center. Dykstra went back to tag in case of a catch, but Sanchez was about two steps from second when the ball dropped in for a hit. Dykstra rounded third and Sanchez was two steps behind him heading for the plate. The throw to the plate was perfect and got both runners to end the inning. Outfielder Matt LaPorta, the key acquisition in last July's CC Sabathia trade with the Brewers, will join the Tribe at Comerica Park on Saturday, and he'll be joined by Luis Valbuena and Josh Barfield. All three players will be promoted from Triple-A Columbus.See, he can do things other than make 80's musical references and Auburn Football comments.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Loons scored five times in the first inning and pulled away to a 9-6 win over the Timber Rattlers. Jaime Pedroza went 5-for-5 and drove in three runs for the Loons. That 5-hit night was the first in the three season history of the Great Lakes Loons.
ALMOST AS GOOD: Rattler first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard went 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles, a walk, four runs scored, and two RBI in the game.
EARLY HOLE: Of the five runs scored by the Loons in the first inning, four were unearned against Rattler starter Michael Bowman. Last night was the second time this week in which the Rattlers found themselves down big early. On Monday, Quad Cities scored six first inning to go up 6-1 on the Rattlers.
KEPT COMING BACK: Wisconsin got a pair of runs in the second and two more in the third to cut the deficit to one. But, the Loons got a run in the fourth. Wisconsin got one in the sixth to make the score 6-5. But, the Loons scored three times in the eighth for a 9-5 lead.
CRUCIAL PLAY: In the bottom of the seventh inning, Juan Sanchez lined a pitch into the left field corner for a one-out double to put the tying run in scoring position. I did not link to the Post-Crescent game story in the Midwest League Action post below, because I thought that Ryan Wilson's article deserved a stand alone post -- and this will probably bring up and issue or two with the Prodigal Beat Writer. But, there are neat facts in there that don't deserve getting lost in the mix. Like:
I want to say that I had both Tom Gordon and Tim* Wallach on my fantasy baseball team ... it was still called Rotisserie baseball in those days... back in college. I'll need to dig through my records to confirm that fact.
*-I put Eli here originally. Good DiMaggio, once those Chris Berman nicknames are in your head, you just can't get rid of them.
Dee Gordon was playing for the visiting Great Lakes Loons, but he certainly felt as though he was back in familiar territory Thursday.Also, Matt Wallach of the Loons is the son of former major leaguer Tim* Wallach.
The Loons' shortstop and leadoff hitter no doubt heard of Appleton growing up. His father, major league relief pitcher Tom Gordon, began his career with the Appleton Foxes.
"He just said (Appleton) was a nice place to play," said Dee Gordon, whose team beat Wisconsin 9-6 at Fox Cities Stadium. "He met a lot of nice people out here, and he just told me it would be a really nice place to play when I came here."
Tom "Flash" Gordon was drafted in the sixth round of the 1986 draft by the Kansas City Royals, who would be the parent club of the Foxes by the next season. Gordon pitched for Appleton in 1988 and had a 7-5 record with a 2.06 ERA before moving up to Double-A Memphis, and eventually, the major league Royals by the end of that same season.

HUNTSVILLE (AA: 10-11; 2nd Southern League South Division): The Stars lost 7-6 to Tennessee. Huntsville scored six runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, but the Smokies got a run in the sixth for the lead.
BREVARD COUNTY (High-A: 14-6; 1st Florida State League East Division): The Manatees beat the Daytona Cubs 7-3. Amaury Rivas pitched five shutout innings, allowed two hits, and struck out six for the win. Zelous Wheeler homered and drove in a pair of runs for Brevard County.
