Whatever happened to...
While doing research for an article I was writing for the PLAYBALL! magazine that will be available during the series with the Chiefs, I saw a pair of names that I often wonder about.
Dustin Delucchi was an outfielder and lead-off hitter for the Rattlers in the 2003 season. He had been signed by the Mariners off the roster fo the DuBois County Dragons of the independent Frontier League and assigned to the Rattlers out of Spring training. He made it all the way up to Tacoma before moving over to the Padres organization last year.
He spent time with Portland (OR) in Triple-A and Mobile (AL) in the Southern League this season before being released.
Delucchi has turned up in an old Northern League city, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Playing for the Canaries of the new American Association in Sioux City, Iowa last night, he went 1-for-5 with a pair of RBI in the lead off spot.
Derrick Van Dusen was the first Timber Rattler pitcher to throw a 9-inning no-hitter. He pitched it at old Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids against the Kernels on August 27, 2001.
He went to the Rangers in a trade that included former Rattler Jermaine Clark in 2002. The Rangers traded Van Dusen to the Indians in March of 2003. Last season, he was 11-6 for Lynchburg in the Carolina League, but got let go.
Coastal Bend, a team based in Robstown, Texas signed him and so far this year he is 3-3 with a 4.86ERA.
As a side note for some other former Midwest Leaguers on those teams:
Angelo Fermin (Beloit), Ralph Santana (Beloit), and Anthony Monegan (Peoria) are in Sioux Falls. JR Pickens (Kane County) is on Coastal Bend.
Last Night in the MWL
@Fort Wayne 3, Cedar Rapids 2 (12 inn) -- I found it interesting that Nick Adenhart started the All-Star game in Davenport on Tuesday and came back to start the second half opener for the Kernels. He pitched 7-1/3 innings, but wasn't around for the decision. Matt Bush, a former #1 overall pick, is back with the Wizards. He wants to shut people up a little bit.
South Bend 10, @Dayton 7 -- Dragons open half number two with a loss. Get this, another former #1 pick, Justin Upton of the Silver Hawks, gets treated just like everyone else.
@Beloit 4, Lansing 3 -- All-Stars Drew Thompson & Caleb Moore come through for the Snappers.
Quad Cities 4, @Peoria 0 -- Another Cub on a rehab assignment, Wade Miller, tosses for the Chiefs. Miller didn't allow any runs, but the bullpen did. Adam Daniels struck out nine for the SWING. The story mentions the possibility of Miller starting at Fox Cities Stadium against the Rattlers on Tuesday, June 27.
Southwest Michigan 2, @Clinton 1 -- The L-Kings were looking for a fresh start. They, um, didn't get it.
West Michigan 8, @Burlington 4 -- The Bees didn't like the All-Star break that much. If you got to the story, go out to the main sports page of The Hawkeye. The caption of the picture coins a new term for a solo home run. "A single homer?" IT may only be there for today, though.
Complete Scoreboard HERE.
Congratulations
Two former Rattlers will play in the Futures Game at Pittsburgh on July 9.
Wladimir Balentien (WI '04) and Yung Chi Chen (WI '05) will play for the World Team.
The only current Midwest League players to be named to the rosters will play for the US team. Pitcher Nick Adenhart of Cedar Rapids and outfielder Cameron Maybin of West Michigan.
And for a blast from the past. Former Milwaukee Brewer Juan Nieves will be the pitching coach for the World Team.
Rattler Alum of the Day
No doubt about it. Wladimir Balentien, San Antonio. 4-for-4, three RBI, home run number thirteen on the season. Plus, the Missions win their first game of the second half.

If Thursday's game were a movie...
Here we go:
If Thursday's game was a movie it would be:
Groundhog Day
Tonight's game was the 1993 Bill Murray classic. All it was missing was the clock radio playing I've Got You, Babe to start the game.
Jared Lansford was Ned! Ned Ryerson! Needlenose Ned! Ned the Head! You can never have too much insurance! He's 4-0 in four starts against the Rattlers this season.
The Cougar Offense was the big party around Gobbler's Knob that just keeps on going. They are 10-3 against the Rattlers this season.
The Rattlers are either Phil Connor while he is still trying to figure out just what exactly is happening to him or the two easily distracted armored car guards.
I don't really see the Andie MacDowell character in this game tonight, but if this is Groundhog Day, the Rattlers will eventually get the girl and win over the entire town.

Game Notes for 6/22
TO END A STREAK: Rattler reliever Joe Woerman allowed a three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday. That blast ended Woerman’s scoreless streak at 19-1/3 innings.
TO END A STREAK (PT II): Jeff Dominguez went 0-for-3 with a walk on Sunday and saw his hitting streak end at twelve games. The twelve game hit streak is the longest of the season for the Rattlers.
WHO IS HOT: Luis Valbuena ended the first half on a ten game hitting streak. He is 16-for-37 (.432) during his second ten game hitting streak of the season.
WHO IS NOT: Michael Saunders ended the half with a tough series against the Swing. He went 0-for-11 with eight strikeouts.
ROUGH HALF: The Timber Rattlers are currently 27-43, a season low sixteen games under .500. That record was the worst first half record in team history. The previous worst first half record was 30-39 by the 2002 Rattlers. The worst record in any half by a Rattler team was the 2002 team’s 23-47 record in the second half.
MOVIN’ ON: Since the end of the first half, Woerman and outfielder Casey Craig have been promoted to Inland Empire, the California League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Infielder Bryan Sabatella was sent down to Everett, the Northwest League affiliate of the Mariners.
MEET THE NEW GUYS: The Mariners have sent infielder Johan Limonta, outfielder Kevin Reynolds, and catcher Travis Scott to Wisconsin. Limonta was a 20th round selection out of Miami-Dade Community College in the 2006 draft. Reynolds was selected in the 42nd round of the 2005 draft out of Quincy University. Scott was a 20th round pick in 2005 out of Lincoln Land Community College. Limonta will make his professional debut when he appears in his first game as a Rattler. Reynolds was a combined 11-for-53 in 18 games between Inland Empire and San Antonio earlier this season. Scott was 0-for-3 in one game with Everett this season.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Kane County claimed the first half Western Division Wild Card with a 40-29 record. The Cougars lost their final series of the half, dropping three out of four to the first half Western Division Champion Peoria Chiefs.
VS. KANE COUNTY IN ’06: The Rattlers are just 3-9 against the Cougars in 2006. The Cougars took three out of four games in each of the three series played in the first half. Most recently, the Cougars went 3-1 against the Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium June 7-9. The teams split a doubleheader on the 7th and Kane County won the final two games. Jeff Baisley and Anthony Recker each had three homers in the first half against Wisconsin. Baisley drove in thirteen runs in twelve games against the Rattlers. The Cougars outscored Wisconsin 69-41 in the first half. Kane County had two pitchers – Jared Lansford and Jason Ray go 3-0 in three starts against Wisconsin this season.
PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA’S Top 30 list of Oakland prospects includes four members of the current Cougar roster. Pitchers Vince Mazzaro (#10), and Jared Lansford (#12) are joined on the list by infielders Justin Sellers (#17) and Jeff Baisley (#30). Craig Italiano, number eight on Oakland’s Top 30 list, is currently on the disabled list. The Cougars have twelve members of Oakland’s 2005 draft class on their current roster, not including Italiano. Lansford (2nd) and Mazzaro (3rd) are the highest of the ’05 draftees. Also from last year’s class are: Sellers (6th), Trey Shields (9th), John Herrera (10th), Steve Kleen (11th), Baisley (12th), Mike Massaro (13th), Isaac Omura (17th), Anthony Recker (18th), Ron Madej (26th), and TJ Franco (30th).
OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Jared Lansford was a second round pick of the Athletics in 2005 draft out of Santa Clara (CA) High School. He was 0-1 with a 1.27ERA for the AZL Athletics in 2005. In 21-1/3 innings he struck out 20 and walked just five. On May 14th, Lansford tossed a seven inning no-hitter against the Beloit Snappers in the first game of a doubleheader at Pohlman Field. Lansford is 3-0 against the Rattlers this season. In three starts against Wisconsin, he has allowed an unearned run and eight hits over nineteen innings. In his last start of the first half, Lansford was beaten at home by the Peoria Chiefs. He gave up seven runs on six hits over five innings on June 15 in a 7-5 loss to the Chiefs. Lansford is the son of former major leaguer Carney Lansford.
New to the Rattlers
Infielder Johan Limonta, a 20th round pick of the Mariners in the 2006 draft out of Miami-Dade (FL) Comminuty Collge.
Outfielder Kevin Reynolds, a 42nd round pick out of Quincy (IL) University in the 2005 draft. He signed in August of 2005.
Catcher Travis Scott, a 20th round pick in the 2005 draft out of Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. He signed as a draft-and-follow before the 2006 draft.

Roster Moves
Bryan Sabatella was sent down to Everett to try to get back on track.
"I got myself into a little slump early on and had to dig my way out of it," Sabatella said. "At the end I started coming on, but it was too little too late. It was a good experience to get my feet wet up there."
Casey Craig and Joe Woerman were promoted to Inland Empire.
There are a few more moves coming and I'll have more when I can post them.
It's not just the Rattlers who are getting roster makeovers. Go over to Mariner Minors for a rundown on the movement in the system.
Among the moves that are of interest to Rattler fans:
Jeff Clement ('05) off the DL and up to Tacoma.
Tom Oldham ('04) done with the rehab assignment for the 66ers and up to Tacoma
Marshall Hubbard ('05) , Mike Wilson ('05), and a host of others promoted from the 66ers to San Antonio.

2006 MWL All-Star game in a Word
Remember that Monty Python sketch about everyone in the Philosophy Department at the University of Woolamaloo in Australia being named Bruce?
The Western Division must feel like that after Dayton Dragon outfielder Jay Bruce had three hits, scored three runs, hit a homer, stole a base and drove in two runs for a 7-1 win for the Eastern Division.
All five Rattlers got into the game. Here's how they did:
Ron Garth started at third base for the Western Division and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
Casey Craig started in left field and went 0-for-3 with two strikeotus.
Jefferey Dominguez entered the game in the top of the sixth inning at second base and reached on an error in his only at bat.
Pitcher Edgar Guaramato retired the only batter he faced to get the final out of the top of the eighth inning.
Pitcher Harold Williams walked the only batter he faced, the leadoff batter in the top of the ninth inning.

Second half starts on Thursday night. See you at Fox Cities Stadium.
