Braves: April 21, 1957

The '57 Braves went to 4-0 to start the season after a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at County Stadium on April 21.

Ed Bailey homered with one out in the second inning off Warren Spahn to give the Reds the lead. But, that would be the only run that Spahn would allow in his complete game. He scattered nine hits and sprinkled in a pair of walks to give the Brave offense a chance to get on track against Johnny Klippstein.

Joe Adcock and Bobby Thomson singled to start the Milwaukee fourth. A sac bunt by Johnny Logan was unsuccessful as Adcock was forced at third. But, the Braves caught a break and loaded the bases when Red second baseman Johnny Temple committed an error on a grounder by Billy Bruton. Del Crandall followed with a two-run single and Milwaukee had the 2-1 lead.

The Braves added a run in the eighth. Hank Aaron doubled to start the inning and scored on a single by Adcock.

Spahn worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the Reds.

Complete box score and play-by-play are HERE.

The win put the Braves in first place by themselves. Brooklyn split a doubleheader with the Pirates and lost their first game of the year. So, Milwaukee is 1/2 game up on the Dodgers.

The Cubs make the trip north to County Stadium tomorrow.
