Mariners: April 21, 1997

The '97 Mariners started a series with the Kansas City Royals at the Kingdome on April 21. The Royals entered play at 7-8 with Jose Rosado getting the start. Randy Johnson has the ball for the Mariners.

Seattle scored single runs in the first, second, and fifth innings. Ken Griffey' sacrifice fly in the first, Alvaro Espinoza's two-out RBI single in the second, and Griffey's RBI single in the fifth staked Johnson to the lead. The Big Unit had given up just two hits in the first five innings, but got into trouble in the top of the sixth.

Back-to-back one out walks to Jeff King and Chili Davis and a wild pitch put Royals on second and third. Johnson got out number two by striking out Joe Vitiello. But, Craig Paquette singled in the runners. Then, Mike Macfarlane doubled to drive in Paquette and tie the game.

Bobby Ayala relieved Johnson for the top of the seventh and the Royals untied the game. Ayala walked Jay Bell with one out. King blasted a home run, his third of the year, and Kansas City went in front 5-3.

Then, the Kansas City bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Brian Bevil replaced Rosado. Bevil walked Joey Cora and pinch hitter Paul Sorrento. Alex Rodriguez hit into a force play at third, but Griffey tripled to pick up his teammate to drive in two runs and tie the game. Edgar Martinez was next and his sacrifice fly was deep enough to score Junior and give the M's a 6-5 lead.

Scott Sanders got the first two outs of the eighth and Greg McCarthy got the third. Then, Nor Charlton entered and pitched a scoreless ninth. He struck out Jay Bell to end the game and pick up save number six.
