Game Notes -- 4/20

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Snappers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Timber Rattlers 3-2. Joe Benson scored the winning run from third when Greg Yersich reached base on a two-out error.

MANSHIP’S ELEVENS: Beloit starting pitcher Jeff Manship retired the first eleven Timber Rattlers of the game. Carlos Triunfel singled with two out in the fourth inning for the first Rattler hit. Then, Manship retired the next eleven batters he faced.

A MAN OF QUALITY: Rattler starting pitcher Ricky Orta allowed one unearned run on two hits over six innings for the first quality start by a Timber Rattler starter this season. Orta struck out four and walked three for a no decision.

LATE RALLY: The Rattlers trailed 1-0 with one out in the top of the eighth. Alex Liddi singled. Leury Bonilla followed with a double down the left field line. Liddi beat the throw home to tie the game. Bonilla took third on the throw home. A sacrifice fly by Jair Fernandez knocked in Bonilla with the tying run.

LATER RALLY: Beloit scored twice against Joe Kantakevich in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Kantakevich hit Garrett Olson to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt by Danny Santiesteban moved the tying run into scoring position. Benson drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to put the winning run on board. Kantakevich got a strikeout for out number two. But, Johnny Woodard singled to right chasing Olson home and Benson around to third. Yershich sent a slow grounder to third that was fielded cleanly by Bonilla. But, his throw to first was low and Liddi couldn’t make the scoop allowing Benson to score the winning run.

NEW AT FIRST: Liddi made his first start at first base last night. He had started the first nine games of the season at third for Wisconsin.

THEY HATE THIS PLACE: The Rattlers have lost five straight at Pohlman Field since last season. The Snappers swept a four game series from the Rattlers July 28 through 31 of 2007 in Beloit.

WALKING OFF: Last night was the third time this week a Rattler game ended as a walk off. Cedar Rapids won on a single in the bottom of the ninth on Monday and the Rattlers beat the Snappers in the bottom of the eleventh on Wednesday.

OPPOSING STARTER: Alex Burnett was the 12th round pick of the Twins out of Huntington Beach (CA) High School in 2005. He pitched for the Gulf Coast League Twins in ’05 and the Elizabethton Twins in ’06. In his first two pro seasons, Burnett was 8-5 with a 4.06ERA and 104 strikeouts in 120 innings. In his last start for the Snappers, Burnett took the loss at Clinton on April 15. He allowed three runs on six hits in six inning with a walk and four strikeouts. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Mariners.
