News from West Tennessee

From today's Jackson Sun, there is news about some possible new owners of Seattle's Double A affiliate in the Southern League.

Possible Jaxx owners plan visit
City officials will hold a reception on Wednesday to welcome the prospective new owners of the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, according to a press release from the city of Jackson.

Reese Smith III and David Freeman, of Diamond Jaxx Baseball Club LLC, hope to close the sale of the Diamond Jaxx from Lozinak Baseball Properties by the end of the year. The two men, along with city officials are scheduled to be at the reception that starts at 4:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Center for Arts and History.

This isn't the first rodeo for Smith.

Smith has an extensive family history in minor league baseball. It was Smith's family who helped found the Nashville Sounds in the early 1970s.

At that time the Sounds was a Double-A team in the Eastern League with the Cincinnati Reds. It later became a member of the Yankees organization.

The Sounds became a Triple-A team for the Detroit Tigers after the family moved the defunct Evansville, Ind., team to Nashville and moved their Double-A team to Huntsville, Ala., as the Huntsville Stars. He still holds a minority stake in the Nashville Sounds.
