July 26 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers lost 9-4 at West Michigan. The Whitecaps grabbed a 9-0 lead and never looked back. Whitecap starting pitcher Jonathan Kibler pitched seven shutout innings, allowed five hits, and struck out eight for his tenth win of the season. The Rattlers scored all four of their runs in the eighth inning on homers by Israel Nunez and Denny Almonte.

OUT FRONT: The Whitecaps scored three times in the second inning – twice on a long home run by Ronnie Bourquin and once on a double by Kyle Peter. West Michigan added two more runs in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and a Brandon Douglas RBI single. All four of these five runs were charged to Rattler starting pitcher Brett Lorin. Lorin was charged with the loss.

NEW ERA: Kibler lowered his Midwest League leading earned run average to 1.81 and became the fourth pitcher in the Midwest League to reach double digits in wins this season.

MATCHING A CAREER HIGH: Joe Dunigan extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the fifth inning. Dunigan is 13-for-28 during this run. He has matched his career-high hitting streak of seven games. Dunigan also had a seven game hit streak with Everett in 2007.

FIRST TIME: Nunez launched his first professional homer last night. The leadoff blast in the eighth inning off Kelvin Cedeno was the first in xxx professional at bats for the Rattler catcher.

HOW LONG? The home runs by Nunez and Almonte were the first hit by the Rattlers since Alex Liddi’s solo homer in Fort Wayne on July 14.

HOW LONG? The home run by Borquin was the first by an opponent off a Timber Rattler pitcher since Justin Baum hit a two-run homer for the Fort Wayne Wizards on July 14.

END OF THE ROAD: The Rattlers concluded their six-game road trip with a 2-4 record. Wisconsin took two out of three from Beloit at Pohlman Field on the first leg of the journey. But, the Whitecaps swept the three game series from the Rattlers. Wisconsin is now 19-38 on the road this season.

HOME AGAIN: The Rattlers begin a 9-day homestand tonight. They will have the Beloit Snappers in for three days. Included in the series with the Snappers is the conclusion of the suspended game from July 7. That game will be picked up on Sunday at 5:05pm with the Rattlers leading 2-1 after two innings. There will be a game scheduled for 7-innings after the end of the suspended game. The Lansing Lugnuts, the first half Eastern Division Champions and the owners of the best record in the Midwest League, are in town for three games July 29-31. A three game series with the Great Lakes Loons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, wraps up the homestand August 1-3. The Rattlers are 19-23 on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They finished the first half with a record of 36-32 and missed one of the two Western Division playoff spots. The Snappers are 17-16 in the second half. They trail division leading Peoria by 3.5 games. The Snappers are behind Burlington by two games for the second half wild card. Beloit has a record of 28-24 away from Pohlman Field this season.

Pitcher David Bromberg (#15), shortstop Estarlin de los Santos (#17), and pitcher Mike McCardell (#18) are also on the list. Outfielders Joe Benson (#2) and Chris Parmelee (#12) and third baseman Deibinson Romero (#13) are all on the prospect list, but they are also on the Beloit disabled list. Pitcher Loek Van Mil (#19) just left the Snappers to join the Dutch National team for the upcoming Olympics in China.

OUT OF THE DRAFT 2007: The Snappers have seven members of the 2007 Minnesota draft class on their current roster. Pitchers Steven Hirschfeld (9th), Michael McCardell (6th), Charles Nolte (24th), and Michael Tarsi (12th) are joined by infielder Chris Cates (38th) and outfielders Ben Revere (1st), and Andrew Schmiesing (11th).

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RH Shooter Hunt was selected by the Twins as a supplemental first round pick in the 2008 draft out of Tulane. Hunt was the 31st player taken in the 2008 draft. In his final season at Tulane Hunt was 9-4 in 16 starts with a 2.68ERA and 126 strikeouts over 100-2/3 innings and was named Conference USA pitcher of the Year and to several All-American Teams. After signing with Minnesota, Hunt was sent to Elizabethton in the Appalachian League for his first stop as a professional. Hunt made four starts and had four no decisions for the Twins. Over 19 innings in the Appalachian League, Hunt allowed four hits and two runs (one earned). He walked six and struck out 34 in those four starts for Elizabethton. In his start prior to this evening, Hunt made his final start in the Appalachian League. He allowed one unearned run on two hits over six innings with a hit batsman, four walks, and six strikeouts for a no decision. Tonight is Hunt’s first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

For tonight

There has been a homestand primer the last few times. I'll try to get to that tomorrow, because I'm a little behind on the day. So here is what is happening for tonight's 6:35pm game against the Beloit Snappers.

Star Wars Night with the team wearing Star Wars themed jerseys. Appearances by characters from the movies. Might this happen?

Dragons president speaks to team

The first serious on-field brawl in nearly nine years of baseball at Fifth Third Field prompted Dragons president Bob Murphy to hold an impromptu staff meeting in the hallway behind the upper-deck suites today, July 25.

"We have a job to do, and we have to be on it," Murphy said. "We want to put on wholesome, safe events for our fans."

Fans not bothered by Thursday's brawl

Don Campbell was first in line at the Fifth Third Field gates on Friday, July 25, waiting for 6 p.m. so he could enter the stadium and find his seat. The 60-year-old could be called the city's biggest Dragons fan, as he has an unofficial museum dedicated to the team in the second floor of his Dayton home.

He, like many fans interviewed before and during the Dragons' Friday game against the Peoria Chiefs, said a bench-clearing brawl on Thursday that resulted in an injured fan and an arrested Peoria pitcher wouldn't dull their enthusiasm about the team.

"My opinion is that the media blows it way out of proportion," Campbell said. "We've had a clean record for nine years. Actually, in my opinion, Peoria started it. Their manager pushed our manager."

Brawl aftermath: Mood cools off a day later

It wasn't going to be a usual night of baseball, so the Dayton Dragons didn't even try to make it that way Friday, July 25.

Muzzled by the parent Reds from talking about Thursday night's brawl with Peoria players, Dayton manager Donnie Scott made another decision. Batting practice would take place indoors instead of on the field, again reducing media opportunities.

The Chiefs are hoping that this event coming up on Tuesday gets attention turned back on them in a more positive light:

Cougars, Chiefs excited to play at Wrigley
Historic ballpark will host its first Minor League game Tuesday

The Peoria Chiefs and the Kane County Cougars will play the first Minor League game in the ballpark's 94-year history in the "Road to Wrigley" matchup on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. CT.

The game represents an opportunity for entry-level players -- Peoria's Cubs prospects and Kane County's A's prospects -- to experience a Major League atmosphere. It puts an image in their minds of the ultimate goal.
Here's hoping.

Rattler History...Since 2000

A 3-4 record. A meh kind of day in Rattler history...since 2000.

Midwest League Action (7/24)

July 24 scoreboard.

@West Michigan 9, Wisconsin 4: "Kibler was on tonight," DePastino said. "He had all three pitches working and he could throw them when he was behind in the count for strikes."

Kane County 7, @Fort Wayne 2: “I think what happened in that last (fifth) inning, (Luebke) was throwing a lot of fastballs and got away from throwing the softer stuff, and even though the last couple of runs were chopped balls, the fact of the matter is he stopped doing what he did so well in the first three or four innings,” Wizards manager Doug Dascenzo said.

@Dayton 3, Peoria 2: "I knew I was fine to play today, but they wanted to give me some rest," Cozart said. "(Pinch hitting) was kind of a spur of the moment thing. (Dragons manager Donnie Scott) called my name, and I was happy to get the hit."

@Great Lakes 7, Clinton 3: "We would've gone 0-6 (against Clinton) if we didn't win this game, but now we have a one-game winning streak," said Loons' manager Juan Bustabad, whose team improves to 12-31. "Now we have Quad Cities (this weekend), and hopefully we can beat them all three."

*Quad Cities 13, @Lansing 4: "It's just the way it goes sometimes. We've got a lot of guys adjusting to new roles, and they're throwing a little bit more than they were earlier in the year. They're just going to have to keep going and work to get better in this last month."

@South Bend 5, Beloit 4: "I thought I got all of it, but I ran hard around the bases just in case it didn't go over," Harbin said of his home run. "It really felt good to get a couple of hits tonight. The last couple of games I had been really pressing, so I decided to slow down and let the game come to me by being a little more patient at the plate.

@Burlington 7, Cedar Rapids 6 (10 innings): "I was kind of surprised," Giavotella said of Fuller playing on the infield. "I've never seen that before. All we had to do was get one in the outfield. I had confidence in Clint."

*-Here's the headline to that story. Notice anything wrong? Clinton scores six in 1st, coasts 13-4

July 25 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The West Michigan Whitecaps beat the Timber Rattlers 8-5. The Whitecaps scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie. Justin Henry had two hits, scored two runs, and drove in three for the Whitecaps.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED: Last night’s starting pitchers – Alfredo Figaro of the Whitecaps and Michael Pineda of the Timber Rattlers – were ranked #1 and #4 in the Midwest League ERA race respectively heading into the contest. Figaro gave up a season high ten hits and a season high four earned runs in five innings. Pineda gave up four runs (three earned) over 4-2/3 innings. Neither pitcher was involved in the decision.

UP EARLY: The Rattler scored once in the first and twice in the second to grab an early 3-0 lead.

BACK TO EVEN: The Whitecaps scored twice in the third and – after Wisconsin scored a run in the top of the fifth – twice in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 4-4.

KEY PLAY: The Whitecaps had the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Rattler reliever Keith Meyer gave up a double Henry that drove in two runs. Rattler left fielder Denny Almonte tried to get Henry at second but, his throw sailed to the West Michigan bullpen and two more runs scored for an 8-4 lead.

ERRORS IN UNLIKELY PLACES: Wisconsin committed two errors last night and both were by outfielders. Maximo Mendez misplayed a single in the third inning that led to an unearned run for the other outfielder miscue.

50/50: Rattler slugger Joe Dunigan continued his hot hitting with two more hits last night. Dunigan is on a season-high six game hitting streak and is 12-for-24 during this run. He is one game shy of his career-high hitting streak of seven games, which he collected in 2007 with Everett.

STOLEN MOMENTS: Wisconsin picked up three more stolen bases last night. Dunigan stole second base in the top of the fifth inning to add to his team-leading total of 20. Mendez stole his nineteenth base of the season last night. Almonte swiped his tenth base of the year. As a team, the Rattlers have 119 stolen bases and they are tied with Burlington for third in the Midwest League in that category. Cedar Rapids leads the league with 182 and Beloit is second with 135.

ALL NINE: The Rattlers knocked out 13 more hits in the game last night and all nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit. Edilio Colina, Almonte, and Joe White joined Dunigan with a two-hit game.

AGAINST THE EAST: This is the last road game against an Eastern Division opponent for the Timber Rattlers in 2008. So far this season, Wisconsin is 4-13 in road games against the East.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The West Michigan Whitecaps are the Midwest League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. They finished the first half with a record of 37-31 and qualified for the playoffs as the Eastern Division Wild Card. The Whitecaps are 16-16 in the second half. West Michigan has a record of 27-22 at home this season.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .239 as a team and have scored 367 runs (3.7/game). Wisconsin has hit 35 home runs this season. The Timber Rattler pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.96. West Michigan is hitting .254 as a team and has scored 448 runs (4.5/game). The Whitecaps have hit 45 home runs this season. The West Michigan pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.39.

2008 SEASON SERIES: West Michigan leads the season series 4-1. The Whitecaps took two out of three games from the Timber Rattlers on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium from April 28-30. West Michigan won the first game of the series 4-3. The Rattlers won game two 7-5. The Whitecaps took the rubber game 6-1. West Michigan has won the first two games of this series.

WEST MICHIGAN STARTING PITCHER: LH Jonathan Kibler was Detroit’s 30th round pick of the 2007 draft. The former Michigan State Spartan was a third-team All-Big Ten selection as a junior after going 5-5 with a 4.34 ERA. He split time between the Gulf Coast League and Oneonta of the New York-Penn League last season and compiled a 3-2 record with a 2.41ERA over those two stops. Kibler, wo was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week on May 19, is 9-4 this season and leads the Midwest League in ERA with a 1.94. Over 112.2IP he has allowed 71 hits and walked 25 for a WHIP of 0.85. In his start prior to this evening, Kibler was beaten at Burlington. On July 20 at Community Field, he allowed one run on four hits over six innings and saw his three-game winning streak end.

Cleansing the Palate

Here is a story from USA Today on ex-Appleton Fox Goose Gossage. He's going to be a little busy this weekend.
As a kid, Rich Gossage's dreams never matched those of his father.

"My dad always said, 'You're going to play in the big leagues some day,' " Gossage recalled. "I pooh-poohed that. I would be like, 'Aw, dad, please don't say that.' And sure enough, here I am."

Gossage did more than just play in the major leagues. He became a dominant relief pitcher in a 22-year career that will receive its finishing touch on Sunday when he is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

For Gossage, a shy, humble guy from the Rocky Mountains, what has transpired since those talks with his dad, Jake, is simply mind-boggling.

"I can't even really comprehend my career," said Gossage, elected in January on his ninth try. "Really, I just can't believe that a kid from Colorado, just a big fan of the game - it's totally overwhelming being elected to the Hall and to have had the career that I had."

Beanings, hard slide came before brawl
How did it start?
Maybe the Peoria Chiefs were angry they had three batters hit with pitches Wednesday night in a 4-3 loss, which ended with Angel Cabrera's walk-off homer.

Maybe their anger escalated when Nate Samson, their second batter Thursday, July 24, was hit by a Kyle Lotzkar pitch.

Certainly the Dayton Dragons and Chiefs realized this wasn't going to be an ordinary game when Dayton shortstop Zack Cozart — the second batter in the bottom of the first — was drilled in the helmet by Chiefs pitcher Julio Castillo.

Then, when the Dragons scored four times on three straight hits, Cabrera walked to the plate. He was hit with Castillo's second pitch. What happened next will be remembered by fans long after the 6-5 victory is forgotten.
That is a Marc Katz article and he tracks down some quotes from the Dragons. Marc just got some ESPN air time, too.

Starting late

The computer was a little slow this morning. Plus, remember that thing I said I was going to do yesterday? I got to do it this morning. I met Kevin Matthews. He used to be on AM 1000 in Chicago and I listened to him a lot when I was in college. Yep, I'm a Kevhead.

He is in Grand Rapids now and is on one of the stations in the group of radio stations that has the rights to the Whitecaps. Dave Skoczen, the radio voice of the Whitecaps, took me into the station today and I got to talk with Kevin for about 10 minutes.

His concert at the Riverside in Milwaukee back in 1990 is still one of the best I've ever seen.

Great to meet him and that's why I'm starting a bit late this morning...So, anything happen in the Midwest League last night?
