Game Notes -- 4/16

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber Rattlers fell behind the Kernels 6-0 early in the game and could not make up the ground as they fell 8-3 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

ONE HIT: The Kernels scored three runs in the first inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Nathan Adcock without putting the ball out of the infield. Peter Bourjos reached to start the inning on an infield single. Next, Adcock walked Chris Pettit. Matt Sweeney appeared to have grounded into a double play, but an error on Carlos Triunfel let the Kernels load the bases. Adcock walked Mark Trumbo to force in a run. Then, Luis Nunez threw away another potential double play ball allowing two more runs to score.

PICKET FENCE: Cedar Rapids added single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to build their 6-0 lead.

TOO MUCH ERR: The Timber Rattler defense committed five errors in Sunday’s game. Those errors led to four unearned runs for Cedar Rapids. Wisconsin has been charged with nineteen errors in the first five games of the season. Wisconsin leads the Midwest League in errors so far in 2007.

STILL RUNNING: Kernel runners stole three more bases yesterday. They are 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts in the first three games of this series.

DOUBLING UP: Rattler first baseman Gerardo Avila went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles before leaving the game in the fifth inning after his second double. Avila slid awkwardly into second and was lifted for a pinch runner.

IN A PINCH: Andy Hargrove entered the game as the pinch runner for Avila. He scored later in the fifth. Hargrove went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and another run scored later in the game.

GET HIM IN: Ougi Diaz drove in a pair or runs with a pair of groundouts on Sunday. He has three RBI in this series.

MR. PERFECT: Rattler pitcher Steve Uhlmansiek pitched two perfect innings in relief yesterday.

OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Jeremy Haynes was the 37th round pick of the Angels in the 2005 draft out of Tallahassee (FL) CC. He signed before the 2006 draft. He was 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA in 16 games (14 starts) for the Orem Owlz in the Pioneer league during the 2006 season. He struck out 68 batters in 59 innings pitched. Haynes Midwest League debut was at Quad Cities on April 9. He gave up eight hits over 5-1/3 scoreless innings for the Kernels and picked up the win. Haynes walked one and struck out three. This is the first time that Haynes will face the Rattlers and an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
