July 26, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Silver Hawks 7-1. Jake Odorizzi struck out eight and allowed one run on three hits over six innings for his sixth win. Eric Arnett tossed three scoreless innings for the save. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris each hit two-run homers with two outs to pace the Rattlers offense.

BIG JAKE: Odorizzi won his fifth straight decision. His eight strikeouts give him 111 on the season. Odorizzi is fourth in the Midwest League in strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 2.98 and is ninth in the league in that category.

YARDWORK: Gennett’s homer came with two outs in the top of the third inning and gave Wisconsin a 2-0 lead. The dinger was the eighth of the season for Gennett. He is third on the team in homers. Morris hit his homer with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to put the Rattlers up 7-1. Morris has hit three homers in 31 games with the Timber Rattlers.

EXTRA MILES: Gennett also doubled in the game on Sunday. He has 32 doubles and leads the league in that category. Gennett has 43 extra base hits this season and is tied with Matt Adams of the Quad Cities River Bandits for the league lead in that category.

MY SACRIFICE: Michael Marseco dropped a pair of sacrifice bunts, one that knocked in a run from third on a safety squeeze in the top of the fourth. Marseco leads the league with 18 sacrifice bunts this season.

ARNETT UPDATE: Arnett allowed one hit, walked two and struck out two as he pitched the final three innings for the save. Since returning to the Timber Rattlers, Arnett has allowed one run on two hits over two outings that total nine innings.

JUST MENTIONING IT: The win on Sunday got the Timber Rattlers to 14-14 on the second half. The Rattlers have a chance to go over .500 in the half for the first time since they were 10-9 after a win in game one of a doubleheader on July 15.

JUST MENTIONING IT (PT II): The Rattlers are 3-1 on the first four games of their current road trip. Wisconsin has not committed an error in the three wins. They were charged with two in the loss.

ANOTHER ONE? This is the eighth doubleheader of the season for the Timber Rattlers. In their previous seven doubleheader, Wisconsin has swept one, been swept in three, and split three. This number of doubleheaders does not include the four Timber Rattlers games that have been suspended and completed the following day.

THE ROAD EAST: The Rattlers play their final two regular season games against the Eastern Division tonight. The Rattlers are 9-13 against the Eastern Division this season: 3-9 at home and 6-4 on the road.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They enter this series with a 40-55 record. They are 10-17 in the second half of the season. The Silver Hawks missed out on an Eastern Division playoff spot in the first half.

2009 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers and Silver Hawks played six games in 2009. The teams split the six games. Wisconsin went 1-2 at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium in a three game series from May 8-10. The Rattlers took two out of three games at Time Warner Cable Field from July 11-13.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .255 as a team. They have scored 462 runs (4.8/game) and hit 55 home runs. The Silver Hawks are hitting .242 as a team. They have scored 350 runs (3.7/game) and hit 46 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.47 while allowing a total of 483 runs (5.0/game) this season. South Bend pitchers have a team ERA of 4.22 while allowing a total of 470 runs (4.9/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 135 errors. The Silver Hawks defense has committed 110 errors. Wisconsin is 18-28 in road games this season. South Bend is 22-24 at home in 2010.

SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER (GAME ONE): LHP Mike Belfiore was selected with the 45th overall pick of the 2009 draft by the Diamondbacks out of Boston College. In his final season with the Eagles, Belfiore went 5-1 with a 2.05ERA in 25 relief appearances. Belfiore went 2-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 14 games (11 starts) for Missoula, the Pioneer League affiliate of the Diamondbacks, in 2009. In his last start for South Bend, Belfiore took the loss against Beloit on July 21 and allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits over four innings. Belfiore, the #6 prospect in the Arizona organization, has never faced the Rattlers. In 2009, he made two starts against Helena, the Pioneer League affiliate of the Brewers. He allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts over 9-1/3 innings against Helena.

SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER (GAME TWO): RHP Diogenes Rosario was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2007. He pitched in the Dominican Summer League in 2007 and 2008 before heading to Missoula in 2009. Rosario went 1-1 with four saves, an ERA of 2.05, and 38 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched over 17 relief appearances for the Osprey. Rosario has made 22 appearances (six starts) for the Silver Hawks this season. In his start prior to this evening, Rosario allowed a run on four hits over five innings at Clinton on July 19 and was not involved in the decision. Tonight is the first time Rosario is facing the Timber Rattlers. He made a pair of relief appearances against the Helena Brewers in 2009 and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits over 3.2 innings with five strikeouts. Rosario was not involved in the decision in either of the .two appearances against Helena.
