Braves: April 18, 1957

The '57 Braves opened their home schedule on April 18. They opened with a 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Things didn't start well for the Braves before the game. According to retrosheet, Hank Aaron stepped on a baseball during a game of pepper and turned his ankle. However, he did stay in the lineup and make the start.

Lew Burdette pitched a complete game six hit shutout of the Reds. He walked one and struck out two in front of 41,506 at County Stadium.

The only run that Burdette needed came in the bottom of the sixth. The Hammer blasted a home run off Hal Jeffcoat for his first homer of the year. Maybe he played pepper and turned his ankle 754 other times in his career.

Burdette gave up a one out single in the top of the ninth, but got the final two outs and Milwaukee moved to 2-0 to start the '57 season.

Complete box score and play-by-play is HERE.

The '57 Braves have an off day on April 19. Back in action against the Reds on April 20.
