Game Notes -- 4/14

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Cedar Rapids beat the Timber Rattlers 4-2. Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-out single by Gavin Dickey. But, the Kernels scored twice in the bottom of the third and added a run in the bottom of the fifth. Jair Fernandez hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth to get Wisconsin to within a run. But, the Kernels scored a run in the bottom of the eighth and Robert Romero pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the Cedar Rapids win.

SEASON DEBUTS: Pitchers Chris Tillman and Tony Butler both made their initial Timber Rattler appearances last night. Tillman worked four innings and struck out seven, but gave up a pair of runs and took the loss. Butler, who is now scheduled to start Tuesday against Beloit, pitched 1-1/3 innings in his first relief appearance since July 14, 2006 when he was a member of the Peoria Mariners in the Arizona League. Butler struck out two, walked two, and gave up one run on one hit.

EARLY LEAD: Dickey’s RBI single in the third inning gave the Timber Rattlers their first lead of 2007.

FEEL THE BREEZE: Rattler hitters struck out twelve times last night. In four games this season, the Rattler hitters have struck out 47 times.

DOUBLED UP: The Kernels turned a pair of double plays last night. The first was a strike ‘em out-throw ‘em out double play in the second inning when Kuo Hui Lo struck out and Alex Liddi was caught stealing. The second was in the fifth when Lo took off on a hit-and-run and Kalian Sams lined out to centerfield. Lo was doubled up easily at first base.

GOING DEEP: Jair Fernandez hit the first Rattler home run of the season last night. His eighth inning blast off Warner Madrigal pulled the Rattlers to within 3-2.

STILL GOING: Carlos Triunfel had a ninth inning single to extend his season opening hitting streak to four games. Triunfel is 5-for-13 to start the season.


OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Trevor Bell was the 37th overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Angels out of Crescenta Valley (CA) High School. Bell went 4-2 with an ERA of 3.50 in sixteen starts for the Orem Owlz in 2006. He made his professional debut for the Angels Arizona League affiliate in 2005 where he had no record in four starts with a 4.50 ERA. Tonight is Bell’s Midwest League debut. This is also his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
