Milwaukee Braves: April 14, 1957

April 14 is two days before Opening Day for the '57 Braves. They are about to begin their fifth season in Milwaukee after leaving Boston.

In 1956, Milwaukee finished one game behind the Brooklyn Dodgers for the National League pennant. The Braves led the Dodgers by 1/2 game heading into their final two games of the 1956 season. But, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Braves 2-1 on September 29 while the Dodgers swept a doubleheader from Pittsburgh to take a one game lead with one game to play.

When Brooklyn beat the Pirates 8-6 on September 30, it didn't matter that the Braves won 4-2 at St. Louis to finish the season at 92-62.

The Braves were the heavy favorites to win the NL pennant in 1957 and it was a great season for baseball in Milwaukee. Rattler Radio will follow the progress of the '57 Braves day-by-day through Retrosheet.

They will open the season with a game at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Warren Spahn will get the starting assignment for Milwaukee. Bob Rush gets the ball for Chicago.
