Mariners: April 14, 1997

The '97 Mariners began a series against the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field on April 14 and they started it in style -- if style is three runs in the first inning off Charles Nagy. Two runs scored on a Jay Buhner double and the other one scored on a Paul Sorrento single.

Dennis Martinez was the starter for the M's and he bounced back after a shaky first start against the Indians at the Kingdome earlier in the season. Martinez would go six innings and allow one run on two hits.

Seattle put the game away with two more runs in the on a sacrifice fly by Edgar Martinez and Sorrento double that drove in Buhner. Russ Davis tacked on a run in the ninth with his third homer of the season.

Martinez was backed up by a scoreless inning of relief from Edwin Hurtado (7th), Greg McCarthy (8th), and Bobby Ayala (9th).

The win put Seattle's record at 7-5 and into a tie for first place in the AL West.
