Mariners: April 16, 1997

The '97 Mariners put together a late rally to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 at Tiger Stadium on April 16.

Randy Johnson faced off against Omar Olivares and was given 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Edgar Martinez grounded into a double play with runners at first and third and the run scored.

Johnson kept the Tigers off the board until the bottom of the sixth. He walked a batter with one out and Tony Clark followed with a home run and a 2-1 Detroit lead.

But, Seattle bounced back in the top of the seventh. Martinez walked and Jay Buhner singled. The Tigers went to the bullpen for John Cummings. Rich Amaral pinch hit for Paul Sorrento and dropped a sacrifice bunt. Then, AJ Sager came into the ballgame. Dan Wilson's sacrifice fly knocked in Edgar to tie the game 2-2.

Johnson worked around a one out walk in the bottom of the seventh and the Mariner bats went back to work in the top of the eighth. But, that work happened after two outs.

Sager retired the first two M's in the eighth. Then, Alex Rodriguez singled. Mike Myers relieved Sager and things fell apart from there for Detroit. Ken Griffey homered for a 4-2 lead. Meyers gave way to Dan Micelli who promptly gave up a double to Martinez and issued a pair of walks to load the bases. An error allowed all three of those runners to score and the Mariners were up 7-2.

The Melvin Nieves home run in the bottom of the ninth off Bobby Ayala didn't matter.

Johnson struck out ten and gave up only three hits to run his record to 2-0.

Complete box score and play-by-play are HERE.

Seattle's win means that they are 9-5 and in first place in the AL West. Next up for the '97 M's is one more game at Tiger Stadium. The red hot Jeff Fassero is the scheduled starter for Seattle. Felipe Lira gets the start for the Tigers.
