Braves: April 16, 1957

The 1957 Milwaukee Braves began their season with a game at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. This first game, a 4-1 win over the Cubs, was thanks to a Warren Spahn special and a four run outburst in the sixth inning.

Spahn had given up two hits over the first four innings. Then, he allowed a one out single to Cal Neeman in the bottom of the fifth. Chicago pitcher Bob Rush was next and he laced an RBI double to left and the Cubs had the lead.

That seemed to wake up the Brave offense. Hank Aaron singled with one out. Eddie Matthews tripled in Aaron to tie the game. Joe Adcock's RBI single chased Matthews home with the go ahead run. The next batter was Johnny Logan and his two-run home run was it for the scoring and more than enough for Spahn.

The lefty retired the Cubs in order in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to close out the game. Spahn gave up four hits in his complete game victory and struck out five. The '57 Braves are 1-0, just like St. Louis, Brooklyn, and Pittsburgh.

The '57 Braves did not play on April 17. Their next game is the home opener at County Stadium on April 18. Lew Burdette is the starter for the Braves. The Cincinnati Reds are the opponents and will send Hal Jeffcoat to the mound.
