What is happening in....

South Bend?

Former Silver Hawks Make It To The Pros

Here is a list of former South Bend Silver Hawks who are currently on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Playoff Roster:

Edgar Gonzalez - 2002

Robby Hammock - 2001

Conner Jackson

Miguel Montero - 2004

Dustin Nippert - 2003

Tony Pena (Adriano Rosario) - 2003

Mark Reynolds - 2005

Doug Slaten – 2002, 2004

Justin Upton - 2006

Jose Valverde – 1999, 2005

Brandon Webb – 2000

I was looking through some old scorebooks the other night and found Valverde was involved in a game against the Rattlers on June 25, 2000. He retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Silver Hawks up 5-2. Then, he walked three straight batters on 3-2 pitches. Wellington Cepeda relieved Valverde and Gorky Estrella hit a game winning grand slam on the first pitch of the at bat. Maybe, I'll get a bit more in-depth on that game later in the off-season.

Time is right for Sharpley to start

BOSTON COLLEGE 27, NOTRE DAME 14: COMMENTARY

JEFF CARROLL
SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame quarterback Evan Sharpley was nearing the end of his postgame interrogation on Saturday evening. And he was bobbing and weaving tough inquiries with great dexterity.

And, then, what was this? A slip-up? A deviation from the drumbeat of team, team, team?

"It was," he said after providing the Irish with a second-half offensive spark in a 27-14 loss to Boston College, "the right time."
OK, so he was talking not about his place in the pecking order, but about his haircut, which has resulted in a recent switch in his look from Berkeley hippie to Beverly Hills suave.

But the statement is applicable, as well, to his role in Notre Dame's quarterback situation.
Give me a break. It's South Bend. Do you really think there will be a lot of Silver Hawk stories while the Fighting Irish are playing football?
