4/25/2008

Good Grief!

Okay, now, imagine forks of lightning and the rain is being blown sideways by a 40mph wind. That's what it is like right now at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Rattlers and Snappers will try to play two games tomorrow. Game one will start at 1:05pm. The second seven inning game will follow that one.

Carl is off in a rage right now. Brick, well, let's just say that Brick wouldn't be much better right now.

This makes six home games lost to the weather already this season for the Rattlers. Here is a haiku of my own.

Rain, thunder, lightning
Why must you oppress us so
Baseball's what we want

Seriously?

Are you KIDDING me!?!?! I mean, where does this stuff come from?

This reminds me of a Haiku I once wrote:

Rain serves no purpose
But to break the hearts and dreams
of all baseball fans

Two ex-Rattlers and a pie

I read about this a few days ago, but just got around to tracking it down.

JJ Putz ('00) is notorious for the shaving cream pie to teammates during interviews. After his first save off the disabled list earlier this week, he was nervous.

He should have been more paranoid.

That is Mark Lowe playing the role of Kato to JJ's Inspector Clouseau at the end.

Thanks to Bleeding Blue and Teal for the video.

Tonight's Rattler Starting Pitcher (4/25)

RHP NATHAN ADCOCK: Selected by the Mariners in the fifth round of the 2006 draft out of North Hardin (KY) High School.

SCHOOL DAYS: In Adcock’s senior season, he went 12-2. He struck out seventeen in a game three times in that season and totaled 140 K’s.

FIRST PRO SEASON: Adcock made ten appearances (six starts) for Seattle’s Arizona League affiliate after the 2006 draft. He was 0-2 with a 3.31ERA and struck out 31 batters in 35-1/3 innings.

FIRST PRO START: Adcock pitched one inning on July 14 against the AZL Rangers in his first professional start. He allowed an unearned run on one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Adcock got a no decision.

FIRST PRO WIN: Adcock picked up his first professional win against Kane County at home on May 22. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out four. The Rattlers were up 6-3 when Adcock left and picked up a 6-5 win. That game is his only appearance against the Cougars.

RATTLER DEBUT: Adcock pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief in the second game of a doubleheader against Clinton on April 10 at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Adcock walked a pair and struck out one as the LumberKings scored three unearned runs.

LAST SEASON: Adcock started 2007 with the Timber Rattlers. He was 2-8 with a 3.70 ERA in 17 appearances (16 starts). Opponents scored 60 runs in 87-2/3 innings pitched, but only 36 of those runs were earned. He was promoted to High Desert on July 20 and went 1-3 with an 8.84 ERA in five starts. In his two stops in the Mariner system, Adcock struck out 77 and walked 60 in 106 innings.

LAST START: Adcock got a no decision against the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on April 19. He allowed three runs in the first two innings, but nothing over his final four frames. The Rattlers trailed 3-1 when he left the game and rallied for a 5-3 win. Adcock gave up seven hits, walked one, allowed a homer, and struck out five.

VS. BELOIT ‘07: Adcock faced the Snappers one time in 2007. On April 20, he allowed two runs (neither earned) on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts over four innings. He left with the Rattlers trailing 2-0, but got a no decision. Wisconsin rallied to take a 3-2 lead, but the Snappers scored four in the seventh and two in the eighth and would win the game 8-3.

PROFESSIONAL BESTS:
INNINGS PITCHED: 7.1 (6/2 vs. Quad Cities)
STRIKEOUTS: 6 (4x – Last: 7/26 @ Lancaster)

April 25 Game Notes

LAST ACTION: The Rattlers lost 10-2 at South Bend. The Silver Hawks broke a scoreless tie with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Evan Frey tripled to start the inning and doubled in three runs in his second at bat of the inning. Taylor Harbin homered in the fourth to cap the scoring for the frame.

TOUGH START: Rattler starting pitcher Edward Paredes retired the first nine batters he faced in the game, but he allowed eight runs on six hits and two walks in bottom of the fourth.

ANNOUNCING HIS PRESENCE: Rattler outfielder Maximo Mendez tripled in his first at bat with the team. In the top of the first inning on Wednesday, Mendez tripled to start the game. The newest Rattler had seven triples last season with Seattle’s Arizona League affiliate.

STREAKING: Rattler outfielder Calvin Beamon and infielder Ron Garth extended their current hitting streaks to four games. Edilio Colina, who had Wednesday off, has the longest current hitting streak of active Timber Rattlers with a six-gamer.

UNSCORED UPON: Reliever Shawn Kelley pitched a scoreless eighth inning on Wednesday. He has not allowed a run in five outings (4-2/3 innings) this season.

GETTING AWAY FROM HIM: Harbin homered in all three games of the series against the Timber Rattlers. He was 7-for-13 (.538) with six RBI in the three game set.

BACK HOME AGAIN: The Rattlers completed their six game road trip to Beloit and South Bend with a 2-4 record.

ERRORLESS RUN: The Rattlers have not committed an error since the third inning of the rain-shortened game at Beloit on April 18. Wisconsin has gone five games (44-1/3 innings) without committing a miscue in the field.

HOME RUN RUN: Timber Rattler pitchers allowed at least one home run in each game of the just completed six-game road trip. Opponents launched nine homers against the Rattlers on the trip.

DON’T YOU KNOW WHAT THE NIGHT CAN DO? The Rattlers are winless in seven night games this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They were 79-61 last season and made it to the playoffs as the first half western division champions. Beloit made it to the Midwest League Championship Series, but lost in five games to the West Michigan Whitecaps.

SNAPPERS IN 2008: The Snappers are 6-14 in the first 20 games of 2008. In their most recent series, the Snappers were swept in a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps in Comstock Park, Michigan. They are 2-6 on the road this season under new manager Nelson Prada.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: Beloit is hitting .241 as a team and has scored 74 runs (3.7/game). They have hit 16 home runs this season. Beloit’s pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.97. The Timber Rattlers are hitting .237 as a team; have scored 46 runs (2.9/game); and have hit two home runs this season. Wisconsin’s pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.05.

2007 SEASON SERIES: The Timber Rattlers went 5-7 against Beloit last season. The Rattlers were 5-1 at home against the Snappers last season. Wisconsin lost the game against Beloit on April 17 and won the final five games played between the teams in Grand Chute.

2008 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers took two out of three games from the Snappers at Pohlman Field in Beloit April 18-20.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook has seven members of the current Beloit roster on their list of top 30 prospects in the Minnesota system. Outfielder Joe Benson (#2) is the highest rated player with the Snappers. Outfielder Chris Parmelee (#12) and third baseman Deibinson Romero (#13) are the other position players on the list. Pitchers David Bromberg (#15), Mike McCardell (#18), Loek Van Mil (#19), and Dan Berlind (#26) are the also on the list.

OUT OF THE DRAFT: There are 12 members of the 2007 Minnesota draft class on the current Beloit roster. The pitchers are: Dan Berlind (7th), Blair Erickson (10th), Steven Hirschfeld (9th), Mike McCardell (6th), Charles Nolte (24th), Dominique Rodgers (36th), Spencer Steedley (25th), and Michael Tarsi (12th); catcher Daniel Lehmann (8th), infielders Chris Cates (38th), Ben Petsch (19th), and outfielder Ozzie Lewis (21st) are also on the Snappers roster.

VETERANS: There are 14 members of the 2008 Beloit Snappers who played for the Snappers in 2007.

FAMILIAR FACE: Catcher Jair Fernandez was a Timber Rattler in 2007 and was slated to start the season in Grand Chute. But, just before camp broke, Fernandez was traded to the Minnesota organization so that the Seattle Mariners could hold on to the rights to pitcher RA Dickey, a Rule 5 selection in December of 2007.

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: David Bromberg was the 32nd round pick of the Twins in the 2005 draft. He was selected out of Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades, California. Bromberg spent 2005 with the Gulf Coast League Twins (3-3, 2.66ERA) and 2006 with the Elizabethton Twins (9-0, 2.78ERA) in the Appalachian League. His last start for the Snappers was his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. On April 19 at Pohlman Field, Bromberg allowed two runs on two hits with four walks, and five strikeouts over six innings. He left the game with the Snappers leading 3-2, but the Rattlers rallied for a 5-3 win.

Yes, the link is to a Steve Winwood song. So what?

Ahem!

Ahem!

I'm just saying. Looks clear for tonight's game. Come on out.
Gates open at 5:00pm.
First pitch at 6:35pm.

Carl without comment

I wasn't going to say anything.

I was going to let this pass. But, this headline from the pros at MiLB.com has been bugging me and I really need to say something.

Dragons' Montano slays Kernels

In the book of headline cliches I keep near me at all times, Dragons do not slay. Dragons roast, toast, claw, or burn. Dragons are slain.

For example, in 2002, Greg Dobbs hit an extra-inning home run at Dayton. Acceptable headline:

Dobbs slays Dragons.

Now, in 2004, Michael Cox hit a grand slam in Cedar Rapids to help the team to a win. Unacceptable headline:

Cox slays Kernels.

Does anybody really slay a nibblet of corn? What size broadsword do you need for that?

Johnny Cueto tossed a rain-shortened no-hitter against the Rattlers a few years ago.

Cueto slays Rattlers. No. Cueto lays waste to Rattlers. Yes.

Look at this painting by Raphael of St. George and the Dragon.

Who is doing the slaying? Not the Dragon.

Not to say that Dragons can't slay something. They are near unstoppabe killing machines and if you really wanted to use another word for what Dragons can do, I guess slay would be acceptable. But, in the mythological context of my headline cliche book and in my world, Bandits Steal, Rattlers Strike, Hawks Swoop, Kernels Pop, Bees Sting, LumberKings Crown, Cougars Maul, Chiefs Extinguish, Snappers Bite, Wizards Cast a Spell, Whitecaps Crash, Loons Laugh, Lugnuts Turn, and Dragons get slain.

Just something I've been thinking about.

The answer

The News-Tribune has this in today's edition:

Rainiers slugger Clement looks like answer for Mariners
A year ago, there was talk among those who pay close attention to the Mariners farm system that Clement was a bust, overrated as a hitter and overmatched as a catcher. No more.

Given the struggles of Jose Vidro – his ninth-inning strikeout on Wednesday was culminated by one of the worst swings I’ve ever seen on a big-league field – Clement presents a simple solution to the designated hitter conundrum. As proposed in this space on Monday: alternate Clement and Kenji Johjima in a catching-DH platoon. Each would play regularly, while neither would be worn down by the grueling job of catching full time.

Clement doesn’t run well, so he isn’t perfect. He’s just a perfect fit for the Mariners. The team needs a left-handed bat? Check. Capable of power? Check. A hitter with the discipline to take borderline pitches and work the count, content to reach first on a walk? Check, check and check.

A couple of days ago there was this from Jason Churchill in the Post-Intelligencer:

Clement improving behind the plate

"He's really a different guy back there now," an American League scout said. "I was a cross checker for that draft and saw him in college, and he's not the same guy. A lot of us were sure he'd have to move off the position, but I don't see any reason why he can't hold down a big-league job in a year or so."

Since the end of the 2006 season, Clement has thrown out 43 percent of runners attempting to steal, best in the Mariners organization. His rapport with pitchers has improved exponentially, and his game-calling skills have followed suit. And he continues to smack the ball around the park -- he has a .696 slugging percentage.

Rattler History...Since 2000

2000: The Rattlers lost 13-1 to Peoria. I was not at this game due to the Green Bay Gamblers being in the playoffs.

2001: The Rattlers had a scheduled off day.

2002: The Rattlers had a doubleheader, but I missed it due to a Gambler playoff game. Also, the person who put together the 2003 Timber Rattler media guide did not put the 2002 game results into the 2003 media guide. That person did not make it through the 2003 season. I can see from my records that the doubleheader was a split.

2003: Wisconsin beat South Bend 4-0 at home. TA Fulmer, Oscar Delgado, and Rich Dorman combined on a one-hitter. Jon-Mark Sprawl’s two-out double in the first inning was the only hit. Dustin Delucchi’s two-run double in the third innings was enough for the Rattlers.

2004: Beloit beat the Rattlers 8-6 at Pohlman Field. Josh Womack hit a homer to start the game, but the game was tied 6-6 heading to the bottom of the sixth. Terry Trofholz homered to start that inning and Beloit scored another run in the bottom of the seventh. The Rattlers got two on with one out in the top of the ninth inning, but Tim Dillard got a game-ending double play.

2005: Beloit shutout the Rattlers 6-0 at Fox Cities Stadium. Wisconsin had six hits off three Snapper pitchers. Jay Rainville got the win for Beloit.

2006: Wisconsin lost 13-4 at Fort Wayne. Marwin Vega allowed nine runs on eight hits in five innings. That is all you need to know about this game.

2007: The Rattlers had a scheduled off day.

Rattlers were 2-5 with a few off days in there. April 25 has been a crummy day in Rattler history.

All-Decade players (1958-1967)

Jay has done a heck of a job over at the Timber Rattler web site with a new series. The idea is to pick out an All-Decade team for the following ten season spans:

1958-1967
1968-1977
1978-1987
1988-1997
1998-2007

There will be a story about the position players and about the pitchers for each decade.

This week's article is about the position players in Appleton from 1958-1967.

You have to go over there to take a look at some of the pictures and the names. Enjoy a look back at some Appleton Baseball History.

Rattler History...Since 2000

Here is how the Rattlers have fared on April 24…since 2000

2000: The Rattlers lost 8-0 to Peoria. I was not at this game due to the Green Bay Gamblers being in the playoffs.

2001: The talk from the night before helped. Wisconsin won 4-1 at Kane County. Miguel Vilillo and Dan Floyd had RBI singles to make the score 2-0. The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the seventh off Tim Burton. Joe Dusan’s two-out, RBI single in the top of the eighth and another RBI single by Floyd in the ninth accounted for the final score. Clint Nageotte pitched five scoreless innings and struck out five for the win.

2002: The game with Clinton at Fox Cities Stadium was rained out.

2003: The Rattlers beat South Bend 3-2 in thirteen innings. This was the second game in a row to go thirteen innings for the Rattlers. South Bend took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Nilson Teilon. The Rattlers tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Jon Nelson RBI single. Dustin Delucchi won the game with a single in the thirteenth. Ryan Rowland-Smith got the win with four innings of scoreless relief work.

2004: The Rattlers lost 6-3 at Beloit. Wisconsin had a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. But, after the stretch, Beloit scored four runs off Brandon Perry. A two-run double by Vinny Rottino capped the rally. Dana Eveland pitched the final four innings for the win.

2005: The Rattlers won 5-4 over the Snappers at Fox Cities Stadium. Yung Chi Chen drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to drive in the winning run. Steve Grasley pitched three scoreless innings for the win.

2006: The Rattlers beat South Bend 8-4 at the Cove. The thing to remember most from this game was what happened in the ninth inning. Wisconsin was up 8-3 with one out when Robby Hudson reached on an error. He was not being held on first and took off for second base. South Bend did not like this. The next pitch was into the ribs of Jeffrey Dominguez. Benches cleared. Words were exchanged. South Bend scored one time in the bottom of the ninth and had two runners on base before the game finally ended on a strikeout.

2007: The Rattlers lost 6-3 at West Michigan. Greg Halman homered for the Rattlers and the game was tied 3-3 at one point. But, the Caps scored two runs in the fifth and added one in the eighth. Ricky Orta started the game, but had to leave after developing a blister on his pitching hand in the second inning. An already taxed Rattler bullpen put up a fight, but in the end West Michigan had too much.

A 4-3 record on April 24 makes today a slight OK kinda day

Midwest League Action (Game of 4/23)

April 23 scoreboard.

@South Bend 10, Wisconsin 2: "We got a couple big hits, but we battled him," Haley said. "He was cruising pretty good, but he gave up a run and he's a young kid, he started forcing pitches and we took advantage of it.

Clinton 5, @Fort Wayne 0: “We didn’t swing the bats at all (Wednesday),” Wizards manager Doug Dascenzo said. “I was very happy with the pitching. We need to do more work with the hitting.

@Lansing 2, Peoria 1: Raul Barron hit a two-run single in the eighth inning Wednesday to give the Lansing Lugnuts a 2-1 victory

@West Michigan 5, Beloit 4 (F/13): Nobody in Grand Rapids felt like writing this one up apparently.

@Great Lakes 3, Kane County 1: "Winning two of three is definitely a confidence boost for us," said Loons' manager Juan Bustabad. "We played the best team on the other side, at least right now, and they were on a roll coming in here."

@Quad Cities 6, Burlington 4: “We bunched a few things together, and it worked out,’’ said Charlie Kingrey, one of five River Bandits to collect two hits as part of a 12-hit effort by Quad-Cities.

Cedar Rapids 7, @Dayton 2: "They better figure it out," Scott said of his players, "or they'll figure it out in Florida, and I don't mean the Florida State League."

Mariner System Report (Games of 4/23)

For those of you interested....the bus arrived back in Appleton around 2:30am this morning. I overslept a bit and needed to get some work stuff done that allows me to keep doing...whatever the heck it is that I do.

Anyway, the Mariner report, the Midwest League action, and Rattler history...since 2000 are next along with a link to the All-Decade team (position players) from 1958-1967 on the main Rattler site.

After that there are some errands to run, laundry to do, and a few other things before the homestand starts on Friday.

To the posts!
