Game Notes for 6/12

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Lugnuts beat the Rattlers 7-4. Wisconsin had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third, but the Lugnuts scored four runs (three unearned) in that inning and three more in the fourth and never looked back.

ONE MAN BAND: Casey Craig had a hand in both of the early runs for the Rattlers. He drove in Jeff Dominguez with a one out double. Then, Craig stole third and scored on a wild throw to third.

ALLEN WRENCH: Rattler pitcher Nick Allen made his first start of the season yesterday. He went three innings and gave up four runs on three hits – all in the third inning. The loss was his first of the season. Allen’s scoreless streak reached 15-1/3 innings before walking in a run with the bases loaded and no out in the third.

SPEAKING OF SCORELESS: Rattler reliever Joe Woerman pitched a perfect eighth inning yesterday and extended his scoreless streak to 16-1/3 innings. Also, Woerman has not allowed a hit in his last six outings. Since his scoreless streak began, Woerman is 1-0 with three saves, an ERA of 0.00 (obviously); opponents are hitting .060 (3-for-50), he has struck out 27 and walked six.

POWER OUTAGE: The Rattlers haven’t homered in their last six games.

ROSTER MOVES: After yesterday’s game, the Seattle Mariners sent Wisconsin catcher Chao Kuan Wu to the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League. Pitcher Marwin Vega has been recalled from extended spring training to take Wu’s spot on the Timber Rattler roster.

WELCOME BACK: Vega last pitched for the Timber Rattlers on May 1 against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fox Cities Stadium. He lasted just 2-1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits with three walks and no strikeouts for a loss. He was sent down to extended spring training in Peoria, Arizona later that week with a 1-3 record and a 6.93ERA. Vega has been plugged back into the starting rotation and will make the start against the Swing of the Quad Cities on Friday, June 16 at John O’Donnell Stadium.

MEN IN BLUE: There will be Minor League umpires working the game tonight. They are back for their first game after an agreement was reached to end their work stoppage.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Russ Savickas was a ninth round selection of the Blue Jays in the 2002 draft out of Johnston (RI) High School. Savickas made nineteen starts for the Lugnuts last season and was 6-7 with a 4.69ERA. In his last start, Savickas took the loss against the Dayton Dragons. He gave up five runs on eight his over three innings. This is the first time he will be facing the Timber Rattlers and also the first time he will be facing an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
