Game Notes for 6/17

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Swing beat the Timber Rattlers 7-1. Trey Hearne struck out a career high ten batters over six scoreless innings for the win. Brady Anderson and Jose Martinez both drove in a pair of runs for the Swing.

10K: Last night was the second time in this series a Swing starter struck out ten Timber Rattlers. Adam Daniels struck out ten Rattlers in game one of the doubleheader on Thursday night. Swing pitchers have combined to strikeout 28 Wisconsin hitters over the first 23 innings of this series.

LEAD OFF HITTER: The Rattlers got the lead off man aboard in six of nine innings last night. Ron Garth started the ninth with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a one-out double by Jeff Flaig to spoil the shutout bid by the Swing.

BACK IN THE ROTATION: Rattler starter Marwin Vega made his first start since May 1 last night. Vega pitched 2-1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Vega left the game because he ran up against his pitch limit.

STRUGGLING AGAIN? All-star reliever Edgar Guaramato had allowed just one earned run in the first 6-1/3 innings (over six outings) he had pitched in June. But, last night, Guaramato allowed four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on three hits and three walks. The game was 3-0 when he entered the game.

ROUGH TRIP: Rattler outfielder Michael Saunders went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts last night. In the first three games of this series, Saunders is 0-for-10 with eight K’s. In the six games he has played on this trip, including three in Lansing, Saunders is 3-for-21 with eleven strikeouts.

IT GOES TO ELEVEN: Rattler shortstop Jeffery Dominguez had a sixth inning single last night to become the first Rattler to reach an 11-game hitting streak this season. Dominguez is 13-for-43 during his current streak. This streak is the second longest active streak in the Midwest League. Brad Coon of Cedar Rapids has a twelve gamer going.

RIGHT BEHIND: Luis Valbuena had a seventh inning single last night to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

SCORING DROUGHT: The Rattlers haven’t scored more than four runs in a game since a 6-2 win over the Kane County Cougars in the second game of a doubleheader at Fox Cities Stadium on June 7. In their last nine games, Wisconsin has scored just nineteen runs. Also, during this stretch of nine games, the Rattlers have not scored more than two runs in an inning. Wisconsin is just 2-7 during this recent stretch.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Kyle Sadlowski of Kutztown University was the 34th round pick of the Cardinals in the 2005 draft. He was 9-4 with three complete games and a 3.78ERA for Kutztown before signing with the Cardinals. He split time between Johnson City (Appalachian League) and New Jersey (New York-Penn League) in his first year as a pro and went 1-5 with a save and an ERA of 6.86. He beat the Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium on May 10 by allowing one run on four hits over six innings. In his last start, Sadlowski pitched a 9-inning complete game victory at Southwest Michigan. He gave up four runs on ten hits and struck out two without issuing a walk against the Devil Rays on June 12.
