Game Notes for 6/18

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Swing got an RBI single from Richard Giannotti in the bottom of the eighth inning to break an 8-8 tie. Brian Stitt pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and Quad Cities beat the Rattlers 9-8. Eddy Hernandez had the first 3-hit game of his Timber Rattler career to pace a 17-hit Rattler attack.

ONE-RUN GAME: The Rattler loss last night dropped their record in one-run games to 6-11.

INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: Rattler starting pitcher Ruben Flores threw seven wild pitches in Saturday’s game. That is a new Midwest League record. The previous record was six wild pitches and had been held by five players. The most recent to throw six in a game was Brandon Kolb of Clinton on May 17, 1996. Kolb threw all those wild pitches against the Timber Rattlers.

ALMOST IN ONE INNING: Flores threw five wild pitches in the second inning alone. Three of his wild pitches in the second allowed a runner to score from third.

GETTING OFFENSIVE: The Rattlers set a new season high for hits with seventeen last night. Last night was also the first time they have scored more than four runs in a game since June 7. Wisconsin aloes plated four runs in the top of the third. That was the first time they have scored more than two runs in an inning since June 7.

EVEN DOZEN: Rattler shortstop Jeffery Dominguez had a pair of hits last night to extend his hitting streak to twelve games. Dominguez is 15-for-48 during his current streak. This streak for Dominguez is the second longest active streak in the Midwest League. Brad Coon of Cedar Rapids moved his hitting streak to thirteen games last night.

RIGHT BEHIND: Luis Valbuena had a pair of hits last night to extend his hitting streak to ten games. This is the second hitting streak of ten games for Valbuena this season.

MY SACRIFICE: Rattler outfielder Casey Craig added to his team leading RBI total with a pair of sacrifice flies last night. Craig has 35 RBI to lead the Rattlers.

ROUGH HALF: The Timber Rattlers are currently 27-42, a season low fifteen games under .500. Whatever the Rattlers do today, they will finish with the worst first half record in team history. The previous worst first half record was 30-39 by the 2002 Rattlers. The worst record in any half by a Rattler team was the 2002 team’s 23-47 record in the second half.

FAMILIAR FACE: Swing closer Brian Stitt has three saves in three opportunities against the Rattlers this season. Stitt had sixteen saves for the Rattlers in 2004.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Cory Meacham was a 37th round pick of the Cardinals in the 2005 draft out of Alabama Southern Community College. He spent time with Johnson City (Appalachian), New Jersey (New York-Penn), and Quad Cities (Midwest) in the Cardinals system in 2005. He pitched four scoreless innings against the Rattler at Fox Cities Stadium as a starter on May 8. He allowed four hits and struck out three for a no decision. Meacham lost his last start, a June 13 outing at Southwest Michigan. He allowed five runs (none earned) on six hits over five innings and saw his personal two game winning streak come to an end.
