Game Notes for 6/25

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Paul Fagan pitched his first 9-inning complete game and the Timber Rattlers beat the Cougars 2-1. Fagan walked one, struck out four, and gave up six hits. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Rattlers.

FAGAN SHOWS HIS QUALITY: The Rattler lefty made his second consecutive quality start (at least six innings with three or fewer earned runs) last night. Fagan has five of the eighteen quality starts by Timber Rattler pitchers this season. In his last three starts, Fagan has walked only two batters over 23-2/3 innings.

RETIRING TYPE: The Cougars scored their lone run on an infield groundout in the top of the sixth. Including that out, Fagan retired the final twelve batters he face.

SQUEAKING OUT SOME RUNS: The Rattlers trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Wisconsin loaded the bases on an infield single, a double that got lost in the lights, a sacrifice bunt, and a walk. Eddy Hernandez drove in the tying run by grounding into a force play at second, but beating the relay to first. The winning run scored on a wild pitch.

PROSISELY PLACED: Nick Prosise dropped the sacrifice bunt in the seventh. It was his first sacrifice of the season and the twelfth of the year by the Wisconsin. Robby Hudson leads the team with two sac bunts.

IT’S A FIRST! Johan Limonta had the infield single in the seventh inning to start the Rattler rally. That was his first professional hit.

IN A PINCH: Kevin Reynolds pinch ran for Limonta in the seventh and scored on the fielder’s choice to tie the game.

GETTING DOUBLED: The Rattlers hit into two more double plays last night. Kane County has turned six twin killings in the first three games of this series.

WINNING WITH LESS THAN FOUR: The Rattlers won for the tenth time this season when they have scored four or fewer runs. Wisconsin is 10-38 in that situation. When the Rattlers allow fewer than four runs, they are 22-13.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Vince Mazzaro was a 3rd round pick of the Athletics in the 2005 draft out of Rutherford (NJ) High School. He did not pitch professionally in 2005. Mazzaro has faced the Timber Rattlers once this season and beat them on May 26 at Elfstrom Stadium. In that game, Mazzaro allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. The Peoria Chiefs beat Mazzaro in his last start. On June 16 at Elfstrom Stadium the Chiefs knocked him out of the game after just 4-1/3 innings with four runs on ten hits.
