Game Notes for 6/13

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers beat the Lugnuts 4-2. Ruben Flores walked six, gave up three hits, struck out four, and allowed two runs over 5-2/3 innings for the win. Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, for the Rattlers. Edgar Guaramato and Joe Woerman combined 3-1/3 innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE: Flores’ win was his first since July 22, 2004. He beat the Eugene Emeralds as a member of the Everett AquaSox on that day. Flores lost his next three starts and was injured on August 13, 2004. He missed the rest of the 2004 season and all of 2005.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE (PT II): Valbuena’s first home run as a Rattler came in the top of the fifth inning and put the Rattlers in front 4-1. Valbuena tied for the lead the Northwest League in home runs in 2005 as a member of the AquaSox. He hit twelve for the Sox with his last long ball coming on August 24, 2005 against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. That home run was the first by a Rattler since June 5th.

KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE: Jeff Dominguez got a single in the top of the fourth inning to move his hitting streak to a season high eight games. The safety for Dominguez came after his ground ball hit Bryan Sabatella between first and second for the final out of the inning. Based on the rules in the rulebook, Dominguez is granted a hit for that play.

SPEAKING OF STREAKS: Rattler reliever Joe Woerman got his sixth save by shutting down the Lugnuts for the final 1-2/3 innings. Woerman has extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings. Also, Woerman has not allowed a hit in his last seven outings. Since his scoreless streak began, Woerman is 1-0 with four saves, an ERA of 0.00 (obviously); opponents are hitting .055 (3-for-55), he has struck out 29 and walked seven.

THE ROAD AHEAD: The Rattlers conclude their first half ending road trip with a five game series at John O’Donnell Stadium that begins with a doubleheader on Thursday.

LATE ADDITION: The Midwest League has announced that Rattler shortstop Jeff Dominguez has been named as a replacement for injured Beloit Snapper Steve Tolleson on the Western Division All-Star Squad. Dominguez will be a reserve infielder and join teammates Ron Garth, Casey Craig, Edgar Guaramato, and Harold Williams on the Western Division squad.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Aaron Tressler was the 32nd round pick of the Blue Jays in the 2004 draft out of Penn State. Tressler spent time with the Lugnuts, Auburn (New York-Penn), and Dunedin (Florida State) in 2005. He made seventeen relief appearances for Lansing and was 3-1 with a 2.06ERA and two saves. He made one appearance against the Rattlers last season and had a 3-2/3 inning save on August 20. He allowed no runs on three hits with five strikeouts at Fox Cities Stadium. In his last start, Tressler allowed one run on six hits and struck out eight over seven innings for a no decision against the Dayton Dragons on June 8 at Oldsmobile Park.
