May 24, 2009: Game notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat Beloit 9-1. Corey Kemp had three hits and scored three runs. Kemp and Jose Duran each drove in a pair of runs for the offense. Trey Watten allowed three hits and one run over six innings for the win.

STARTING FAST: Erik Miller started the game with a double. The Rattler outfielder scored on a one-out RBI single by Duran.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Watten gave up back-to-back doubles to Ramon Santana and Angel Morales in the bottom of the second to let the Snappers tie the game.

A LITTLE IS ENOUGH: Wisconsin put together five singles and two walks in the top of the third inning to grab a 5-1 lead. Miller, Juan Sanchez, and Duran started the frame with consecutive singles. One out later, Kemp delivered his two run single. A walk and another single loaded the bases for John Delaney. The Rattler third baseman drew a walk to force home the final run of the inning.

WORKING THROUGH SOME THINGS: Watten walked the bases loaded in the third but got out of the inning unscathed. He walked the lead-off batter; struck out the next batter; walked the next; struck out the next; and walked the fifth batter of the inning. A grounder to third ended the inning.

FIRST SINCE: Watten got his second win of the season. The victory ended a personal four game losing streak for him. He did not allow a hit after the RBI double by Morales in the second inning.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE: Three Beloit pitchers combined to throw four wild pitches last night. Two of those pitches allowed Rattler runners to score from third.

JUST A LITTLE PATIENCE: Rattler hitters drew six walks to match the single game high for the 2009 season.

SPELLING RELIEF: Brandon Ritchie worked around a pair of walks with a pair of strikeouts to pitch a scoreless seventh. Nick Tyson worked the final two innings without allowing a run.

THROUGH THE QUAD AND TO THE GYMNASIUM: Two Timber Rattlers extended their season high hitting streaks last night. Edgar Trejo and Jose Duran are both on seven-game hitting streaks. Trejo is 10-for-25 (.400) and Duran is 11-for-29 (.379) during their streaks.

I REMEMBER YOU: Juan Sanchez went 1-for-6 with a run scored for the Timber Rattlers last night. Sanchez was in the Twins organization from 2005 through 2008 until he was selected by the Brewers in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft.

ROAD TRIP! The Rattlers began a 12-game, 12-day, 4-city road trip last Wednesday. Wisconsin is 2-2 so far with two games left in Beloit and three game series in Dayton and West Michigan still ahead. The Rattlers return home on June 2.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They are 15-26 and in eighth place in the Midwest League Western Division. The Snappers are 9-1/2 games out of first place.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .257 as a team. They have scored 191 runs (4.5/game) and hit 24 home runs. The Snappers are hitting .255 as a team. They have scored 200 runs (4.9/game) and hit 53 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.34 while allowing a total of 211 runs (5.0/game). Beloit pitchers have a team ERA of 5.56 while allowing 258 runs (6.3/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 60 errors. The Snapper defense has committed 54 errors. Wisconsin is 4-14 on the road this season. Beloit is 8-13 at home this season.

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RHP Brad Tippett was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in January of 2006 out of Australia. He spent time in the Gulf Coast League in 2006 and with Elizabethton – where he was 7-1 with three saves and a 0.93ERA in 21 relief appearances – in the Appalachian League in 2007. Last year, Tippett began his season with Beloit and he went 2-1 with a save in 13 relief appearances. He was sent back to Elizabethton after the Appy League season started and went 8-3 in 14 starts with nine walks and 63 strikeouts in 74 innings. So far in 2009, Tippett is 3-1 with a 3.47 ERA. In his start prior to this afternoon, Tippett lost to Peoria. He gave up four runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings at Pohlman Field on May 19. Today is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
