Brewers: April 25, 1982

The '82 Brewers won their fifth game in a row and swept a three-game series at Texas with an 11-6 win over the Rangers on April 25. Robin Yount, Cecil Cooper, and Don Money all had big days for the offense. For the pitchers, Dwight Bernard and Rollie Fingers pitched shutout ball out of the bullpen in relief of Bob McClure.

The Brewers jumped out 1-0 in the first inning against Charlie Hough. Charlie Moore -- yes, Charlie Moore -- hit in the lead off spot and doubled. Yount didn't move Moore over, but Cooper doubled and Moore scored.

Then, McClure gave up two runs in the first. He hit the first batter, committed a balk, and gave up a home run to lee Mazzilli.

Milwaukee answered with two runs in the second. RBI singles by Jim Gantner and Yount made it 3-2.

In the third, Roy Howell drew a two out walk and Money hit his second homer of the season for a 5-2 lead.

McClure got into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. He gave up a single and a walk to put two on with one out for Buddy Bell. Bell doubled in both runners. Larry Parrish drew a walk and that was it for McClure. Bernard entered and got the second out. Jim Sundberg was next and he drew another walk to load the bases. Mike Richardt singled, both Bell and Parrish scored and the Rangers were up 6-5.

That didn't bother the Crew. Ned Yost, getting the start at catcher in place of Ted Simmons, singled. Moore reached on an error by Bell. Yount singled in the tying run. Cooper singled in the go-ahead run.

Milwaukee put the game away in the eighth. Yount singled with one out. He stole second, and scored on a double by Coop. Ben Oglivie was walked intentionally. One out later Howell doubled in both Cooper and Oglivie for a 10-5 lead.

Gantner put the finishing flourish on the Brewer win with a lead-off home run in the top of the ninth off Danny Darwin.

Complete box score and play-by-play are HERE.

The win put Milwaukee's record at 8-6. They are still in third place in the AL East and 1-1/2 games behind Detroit.

April 26, 1982 is an off day for the Crew. They resume play with the Chicago White Sox at Milwaukee County Stadium on April 27.
