June 16, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers defeated the LumberKings 8-1. Maverick Lasker tossed seven innings and struck out six for his fourth win of the season. Chris Dennis drove in three runs, Cutter Dykstra had three hits, and Scooter Gennett homered to pace Wisconsin’s 11-hit attack.

SLOW START (PT I): Clinton starting pitcher Taylor Stanton retired the first 12 Timber Rattlers hitters of the game.

SLOW START (PT II): Lasker allowed a run on three hits in the first two innings.

STRONGER AS THE GAME WENT ON: Lasker allowed two hits over his final five innings of work. At one point, Lasker retired 10 batters in a row.

PERMISSION TO BUZZ THE TOWER: Lasker tossed his first quality start of the season and matched a professional high for innings pitched in a game with seven. Lasker did not walk a batter and no LumberKings hitter made it past second base after the second inning.

NO FREE PASSES: Lasker and relievers Caleb Thielbar and Brian Costello did not walk any Clinton hitters last night.

COME TOGETHER: The first four Wisconsin hitters in the top of the fifth inning singled. The RBI single by Dennis chased Khris Davis home with the tying run. In the sixth, an error, an RBI double by Cameron Garfield, and an RBI single by Dykstra put the Rattlers in front 4-1.

HE’S A MENACE AGAIN: Dennis snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a two-run single in the sixth inning of game two of a doubleheader against Dayton on June 12. Since that hit, Dennis is 5-for-8 with eight RBI. He has taken over the team lead in the RBI category with 39.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM. NOW, GET IN THERE: Costello and Kentrail Davis joined the Timber Rattlers on Monday. Both got into the game yesterday. Davis started in right field was 1-for-4, was hit by a pitch, and the first ball put in play in the bottom of the first was a flyball to right. Costello pitched a perfect ninth inning with a fly out, a pop out, and a ground out to end the game.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Clinton LumberKings are the Midwest League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The LumberKings are 35-29 and in third place in the Western Division of the Midwest League. They can no longer catch Cedar Rapids for the first half division title. Clinton trails Quad Cities by four games for the Western Division Wild Card with five games remaining in the first half.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The season series is tied 2-2. The Rattlers and LumberKings met three times at Time Warner Cable Field earlier this half. Clinton took two out of three games from the Rattlers. Wisconsin won game one on April 11 8-2. The LumberKings came out on top by scores of 7-4 and 4-2 over the next two days.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .244 as a team. They have scored 295 runs (4.6/game) and hit 30 home runs. The LumberKings are hitting .243 as a team. They have scored 314 runs (4.9/game) and hit 66 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.56 while allowing a total of 328 runs (5.1/game) this season. Clinton pitchers have a team ERA of 3.14 while allowing 249 runs (3.9/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 105 errors. The LumberKings defense has committed 82 errors. Wisconsin is 10-19 on the road this season. Clinton is 20-14 at Alliant Energy Field this season.

CLINTON STARTING PITCHER: LHP Jimmy Gillheeney was the eighth round pick of the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 draft out of North Carolina State. He was 6-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 13 starts in his final season at NC State. Gillheeney pitched professionally at Pulaski, Seattle’s Appalachian League affiliate, after signing with the M’s. He was 0-3 with a 4.84ERA over six appearances (three starts) for the Mariners. In his start prior to this evening, Gillheeney beat the Lake County on June 10. He allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts over five innings. On April 13 Gillheeney beat the Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field. He allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings.
