June 17, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers defeated the Clinton LumberKings 7-2. Cameron Garfield drove in three runs for the Rattlers. Four Wisconsin pitchers combined to strikeout 12 Clinton hitters. Four LumberKings pitchers combined to walk eight Wisconsin hitters. The win was the second straight for the Rattlers.

BIG JAKE: Wisconsin starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi allowed a first inning run on a two out single by Tim Morris. After that he allowed three hits and struck out five to qualify for his third win of the season.

CONTRIBUTING: Kentrail Davis tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Davis is 3-for-7 in his two games with the Rattlers.

CUT HIM DOWN: Clinton centerfielder Matt Cerione tripled with one out in the fourth. The Rattlers brought the infield in for the next batter. Steven Baron grounded to shortstop Michael Marseco. The throw to the plate was in time to get Cerione and keep the game tied.

SQUEEZE! Erik Miller started the Wisconsin fifth inning with a double. Kyle Dhanani sacrificed him to third. Marseco dropped a bunt on a suicide squeeze play to score Miller with the go-ahead run.

MY SACRIFICE: Marseco leads the Midwest League in sacrifice bunts with 12.

PUT IT AWAY NOW: The Rattlers tallied four times in the top of the eighth inning to grab a 7-1 lead. Garfield, who drove in a run with a ground out in the sixth, doubled in a pair of runs in the eighth. D’vontrey Richardson followed later in the inning with a two run single.

JEFFRESS UPDATE: Rattlers reliever Jeremy Jeffress struck out five and walked one over two scoreless and hitless innings (the seventh and eighth).

YOU’RE WELCOME: For the second day in a row, the win by the Rattlers got a team into the Midwest League playoffs. On Tuesday, Wisconsin’s win got Cedar Rapids into the playoffs. Last night – despite losing to Kane County – Quad Cities got in due to the Rattlers’ victory.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Clinton LumberKings are the Midwest League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The LumberKings are 35-30 and in third place in the Western Division of the Midwest League.
